first person to figure out the 101st day of the year without using a calculator or the internet gets six Rozpoints.

    January 31st is day 31.
    February 28th is day 31+28=60-1=59.
    March 31st on a non-leap year is day 31+28+31=90 +1-2+1 = 90.
    April 10th is day 100.

On a leap years, April 9th is day 100, because there's one more day pushing the date forward.

  • my school days weren't hell on earth either
  • I had relatively easy school days, too.

Sure, I was bullied, but I had some friends to get me through.

I mean I had my share of middle school angst, but it seems like nothing compared to almost everyone else here...
  • My secondary school years where mostly full of my teenage emo wangsting.
  • Ironically, I stopped being emo when depression hit for reals.
  • elementary was bad for me, middle school was hell

and then high school was pretty great
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Middle school seems to be bad for a lot of people, including myself. But then, I don't really consider that to be "childhood," strictly speaking.

I like T-Mobile's use of hot pink.

    it's fuschia

also I find it amusing how they use Atlas Grotesk and Sprint uses Graphik - same foundry, same designer (in part for Atlas)

According to this definitely-representative map, T-Mobile users in North America are notable for calling northeastern Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, someplace in Kamchatka, southern Greenland, Wales, Portugal, South Africa, Brazil, Chile, and two other indeterminate locations.

interesting Wikipedia articles of the moment

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commander_Islands (a small group of islands in the far east of Russia, the westernmost part of the Aleutian Islands chain)

pictures of their treeless slopes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:О._Медный_456547.jpg , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Бухта_Буяна_1.JPG

There is no true forest on the Commander Islands. The vegetation is dominated by lichens, mosses and different associations of marshy plants with low grass and dwarf trees. Very tall umbellifers are also common. There are no amphibians or reptiles.[2]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zapovednik (a Russian term for a type of protected (usually wilderness) area)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snooty (a human-raised manatee, who is 67 years old currently)
  • We can do anything if we do it together.

Say what you will about Firefox but at least Mozilla's not in Adobe's pocket like Chrome and IE packaging Flash Player with the browser by default

Hasn't Google done more than anyone outside of Apple to try to kill off Flash?

Yes, but they're also smart enough to know that people won't use a browser that doesn't play every online video they want, so they bundle the Pepper version of Flash Player with Chrome

Incidentally, this is the only version of Flash Player that's still being updated on Linux!

What people say: OMG WINDOWS 10 ENABLES KEYLOGGING BY DEFAULT!!!

What that actually means: Windows 10, like every other operating system with a touchscreen keyboard, keeps track of what you type so as to "learn" what words you do and don't want autocorrected

Like this is literally something iPhones have been doing for years and nobody fucking cared but when it's Microsoft suddenly it's evil spyware??

lol i always turn off these features

i'm also always aware that any time i'm sending information over some sort of network, SOMEONE ELSE has to be able to see it, BY NECESSITY, so there is relatively little presumption of privacy other than drowning in volume

I knocked on the door. Before I knew what was happening, the door flung open and I was staring at a shotgun barrel.

"Relax, Irene, it's just us," said  Ben.

Irene dropped the shotgun to her side. "Oh hey, Ben. Come on in."

"Does she always answer the door with, uh, firearms?" I asked.

"Most of the time, yeah. You get used to it after a while."

"Hey Irene, do you think you could take a look at Grandpa's car?"

    Just then the phone rang.

"Hang on, let me take this," said Irene.

"Route 26 Service Station, Irene speaking. No, I'm not a towing company. I know. Google is wrong. Yes it is. I don't even own a tow truck. No, I'm not saying I can't fix your car, I just can't get it here. Right. Thanks for calling."

Irene hung up. "My god, that's the third person this week calling asking me for towing. Stupid Google gives them my phone number, I guess."

"So take advantage of it!" I said. "Buy a tow truck and start raking in the money."

"Hmm...I'm gonna go with no." Irene lit a cigarette. "Now what were you saying before?"

"Grandpa's car...it's been sitting in our driveway for weeks and it won't start. Can you take a look at it?"

"Sure. Just don't expect me to tow it."

i think 'pretentious' is actually kind of an elitist term

because it assumes that the speaker is smart enough to distinguish genuine smarts/creativity from affectation, and that the person described is faking it
