  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
There might be some uniformity across all human art with regards to space, emotion, and portraying ourselves.

But I feel like everything else, absolutely everything else is subjective. Messages, forms, techniques, and other conventions.

this is one of the highest "low clearances" I've seen to date

really when you get above 14 feet or so there's no real reason to post the signs anymore

Reading about remediation and the mixing of various arts and forms and how a new medium appropriates the techniques of the older medium until it finds its own, that's all very interesting.

But reading about something being gendered, the "male gaze" this the "female form" that, is really tiring. Especially if the text goes into Freud.

My thought on it is that yes, everything is inherently male and female, for varying definitions of "inherent." Male and female is a natural and social binary like computer codes use binary.

But 0 and 1 as well as male and female mean nothing in isolation, independent of each other. Binary is formed into a symbol, which is fitted into a system of codes, a language, with which we create meanings and understandings. Those are the problems.

    i disagree

Binary relations in the social sense are not binaries in the sense that computer codes use binary

they're not two discrete values that can't be otherwise

It's still something that worries me, admittedly

But I've got a few years left at least

That's exactly my point, though. Social binaries are formed of our language. Our unwieldy, imprecise language.

This is my reconciliation of Daoism with modernistic thinking. That ascribing innate qualities to "male" and "female" is ultimately useless, because when you reduce something to its basest parts, you get nothing, because it is nothing.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Possibly my problem here is i don't understand the Daoist perspective.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i feel that 'male gaze' is a valid and important critical concept.

Not a pleasant one, but its existence shouldn't be disregarded.

These are the Eight Trigrams. A straight line represents Yang, the male, bright aspects. A "broken" line represents Yin, the female, dark aspect. The point of this is that everything is made up of complicated aspects, and reducing something to nothing but a singular aspect is unideal and unrealistic.

What I object to is that we associate anything at all to either aspect. Because when you look deep enough, what is light? What is dark? Why do we ascribe emptiness to 0 and substance to 1 when both is required to make anything at all?

I also have no objection to the idea of the male gaze, in the context of being a male in society, viewing others as society teaches us to. What I object to is an ultra-granular approach that states that the "singular" viewer is practicing the male gaze and the "plural" viewer is practicing the female gaze.

Oh OK, that's interesting, and clarifies things.  i don't disagree.

Your second paragraph there sounds a lot like poststructuralism, btw.  Or maybe i should say that certain poststructuralist ideas sound a lot like a Daoist concept.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Hmm, yes, this does sound like post-structuralism, which I am reading about now.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I can honestly say that lots of people who practice Daoistic principles are not critical of the binary opposition, but I feel like they can be. It's right there, written into our language and our code, of both forces working and acting in concert.

  • I do have to check that I am not going back to time somehow. I do like it, and want to get one for myself, but it does freak me out when I forget that it's a backwards clock.

I wasted a whole bunch of time following random railways around Indiana on Google Maps

Then I ran to the end of that track and picked up a different one in Kentucky

I'll bet that cost more than a normal clock because the mechanism would have to be custom made to tick backwards instead of using the super cheap internals of every other quartz clock
  • I don't care how much it costs.

    I need one.

I shall haunt every clock shop until I find one.
