You know while i haven't played Spec Ops the Line, it *does* sometimes bug me how it feels like stuff that's witty and/or thought-provoking is apparently eyeroll inducing here

like i don't think i'm actually an elitist, but a lot of stuff that's supposedly just dumb and enjoyable just feels obnoxious to me, or at best kind of boring

but any time i think something's smart, now i have a nagging voice that goes 'what if you just think this is smart, but actually it's a stupid thing that assholes who THINK they're smart like so they can feel superior?'

I am literally the only person here who has a problem with SOTL and am told every time it's brought up how horrendously wrong I am for not liking such a great work of art.

    I get it.

    1. i have not played Spec Ops the Line
    2. i know barely anything about Spec Ops the Line
    3. i do not think Spec Ops the Line is a great work of art, although i would be open to convincing
    4. i have never told you you are horrendously wrong for not liking Spec Ops the Line
    5. my post was not about Spec Ops the Line, i only referenced it cuz of Tucker's thread and it reminded me of a more general thing that bothers me on HH

Good, because TORG's rules harshly discouraged kitchen sinks
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Battleworld is almost certainly a kitchen sink, and it doesn't have a seamless contextualization.

But I feel like it shouldn't be seamless. It was conjured up eight years ago, and the seams are part of the story.

I suppose I am still somewhat bitter about essentially being banned from IJBM2 for not liking it.

[the actual details of the matter are more complicated than that and have a lot to do with that place's forum culture, but it was a factor]

Also when I brought up that I enjoyed Spec Ops, a bunch of people in irc started pestering me about it, so it goes both ways

I feel like this is a kitchen sink. Just that you have a bunch of bowls full of water precariously stacked on each other and they spill into each other all the time and that's fun to some folks.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
that sounds pretentious as hell but i just never was much interested in the genre

I just mostly felt like it was

    really self-serving.

And I feel that way about a lot of "corrective" media, stuff that leads you in with a promise of X, and then tells you that you are a bad person for liking X.

That really is my core problem with the game, and several like it.

man if a forum is the sort of place that would ban Jane, would it be the sort of forum worth hanging out on?

    I think not.
  • I like Halo because asides from being solid mechanically it has a very interesting backstory and setting.

    Other "dudebro" shooters...

I guess I liked Titanfall quite a bit.

Mech Assault too if it counts.

At Glenn's behest I have technically been unbanned there for like a year now but I've never gone back.

    Fuck that place, tbh.

  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Halo is at least fairly accessible to someone like me who sucks massively at shooters
  • man every time ive been there it's been heinous and embarrassing

can you delete accounts there? if so i need to delete mine just for the sake of spiritual cleanliness
  • I was, once upon a time, actually very good at Halo 2.

I also used to play baseball.

I bring these facts up from time to time not to impress people but because they seem surreal even to me.

but it depends how you define worldbuilding, i notice i use the term more generally than most people seem to

All the successful trans women on the internet are crazy, no?
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Some worlds are careful placements of courses on a dining table.

Some are huge amounts of chopped whatever fried with rice in a big wok.

Some are a dog dish with large chunks of stuff piled high.

Some are a big table of gregarious eaters all eating different things, but food is passed around from plate-to-plate all the time.

In this analogy, I prefer eating on the kitchen countertop. You can put flan, jello, stir-fried chicken, porridge, cream of mushroom on the table and I'll eat it all. But the fridge is right there, so I can tinker with it, fry some eggs, add some spice, if I want to.

at sixth form i used to play football (soccer) during lunch break, but only when it was warm and dry out

that is about it for me on the sporting front
  • I wish people hadn't written Titanfall off out of hand because it was actually very fun and it just kind of died because no one was ever on.

It's weird, and NL has talked about this, but people expect every game to check a certain amount of tick boxes and people really just seem unwilling to give something without single-player a shot unless it's an MMO.

Even if those same people would criticize a tacked-on campaign as, well, tacked-on.

    I was a batter.

A rather mediocre one at that.

I played for the Saint Elizabeth Chargers.

We were not a particularly good or fun team.

For me, video games are first and foremost a solitary experience. So a game that doesn't give me that is not something I usually pick up.

I feel like that's true for a lot of people.
