psst, I knew, I just am forbidden from saying the last two syllables of his name by the ancient bonds made before the dawn of time that bind all Mormons from saying dirty words, having a favorite jello color other than green, or eating cheerios on fast sunday.

It's in one of the genesis verses, trufax.

Somehwere in the bible it says that Root Beer is permitted once every ten years.

Honestly, after thinking about it further, I don't think I could ever justify buying from a place like that

I mean, most likely they're selling misued MSDN keys

And if I were going to pay 20 bucks that's all going to end up in the hands of some guy at Reddit and Microsoft isn't going to see a penny of it anyways, I might as well just straight-up pirate the damn software

"Dime" is a weird one becuase it has a legal definition, it's not just an informal name for the coin like "penny" or "nickel"

So whereas a penny says "ONE CENT" and and a nickel says "FIVE CENTS" a dime actually says "ONE DIME"

    > copper = 0.1 silver, silver = 0.1 gold, gold = 0.1 plat

I wonder what pre-decimalization Greyhawk currency was like.

Sometimes i think it's a pity our coins don't have names like yours anymore.

    It's all 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, 1 pound, 2 pounds, 5 pounds, 10 pounds, 20 pounds, 50 pounds, a hundred pounds

When I was younger, I saw a psychiatriast at Nationwide Children's Hospital (then just "Children's Hospital"). Dad and I would park in the garage, which required a token to open the gate upon exit

The tokens were dispensed from machines in the hospital lobby. Parking was $2, and the machines would accept either two $1 bills or 1 $5 bill. If you used a $5 bill, it would give you the parking token...and three $1 coins.

I always loved to use that machine, because $1 coins were (and still kinda are) a novelty to me. Back then, it was usually a mix of Susan B. Anthony dollars and Sacagawea dollars...

Ironically the machine that dispensed $2 parking tokens would not accept a two-dollar bill as payment.

Was it here or on TVT that i found out that a dollar bill existed and was really surprised?

    That's funny with hindsight.

Is there a pattern or theme to these?  We don't have Wendy's over here but the others all mean the same things over here as over there afaik.

Actually i don't know what Ocean World is.

Something like a Sea Life Centre, i'm guessing?

Quarter - 25¢ (one of the more obvious names)

    The common denominations for paper money are $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100

There are also 50¢ coins, $1 coins, and $2 bills, but you don't encounter those very often

The pattern for my post (and the other one like it) was words which are only used in the US, or are more common in the US, or are commonly used in the US to mean something different from what we'd say over here.

@Tachyon: If you haven't figured it out yet, I enjoy getting to be the weird foreign one who gets to explain my country's idiosyncracies to people from other countries.

I don't get to do that very often since most of my friends are American and American culture is so pervasive even on the Internet.

i actually knew this, although until very recently i would have been surprised to hear that you had a coin you called a penny.

For a long time i knew there was an American coin called a nickel and another called a dime, but didn't know what either was worth.

IT's always a pinch of salt, because my grandma grew up with the little glass salt bins that looked like crystal and you would pinch the salt.

i know, i was just listing the closest UK equivalents to the American expressions i already listed. i'm aware that some of them are not UK-exclusive.

iirc your definition of pavement is slightly different - would you refer to a concrete (i.e. not paved) sidewalk as the pavement?

In America, "pavement" refers to any paved surface.

In Britain, "pavement" refers to what we would call a sidewalk.
