Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I still think the object of the post was "this guy feels creepy" instead of "he touched me in the bad place."
And the point of "goes out of his way to feel important and desirable" is that we must consider who Green is: a middle-aged man. The message "you are desirable" changes when you consider both the receiver of the message as well as the transmitter.
Are his motives pure? Maybe. I wouldn't know. I don't really have a horse in this race. But I can understand wanting to express a feeling and having it blow up in your face.
I feel like, the original poster did okay. I mean, you should be able to talk shit about people in the general viscinity but more or less out of "earshot."
If someone wants to say about someone "this guy feels creepy," then okay, sure. They feel creeped out.
What you shouldn't do is the equivalent of shouting across the room and go; "HEY COME LISTEN TO THIS PERSON SAY YOU'RE CREEPY." Because that's crossing a line. That's the person you're talking shit about to get the shit in their faces, when the point of gossip is to do it behind people's backs, and sometimes, if they overhear, then good.
Because then the guy is going to go; "GOD FUCKING DAMN IT I DON'T FUCK KIDS OKAY," and since it made a big fuss, people are going to start taking sides.
Gossip is gossip. People are going to gossip. But you shouldn't tape record the gossip like it's an accusation.
Okay but there's gossip and there's "the worst part about john green is that hes a pedophile. how do i know he is? well, i dont like him. thats how." I think there's a bit of a difference in degrees, there.
as celebrity gossip goes that is basically par for the course
The thing that the original poster seemed to not grasp is that writing for an audience and trying to talk to a single person face to face are incredibly different things.
If he was like, hanging out on a school campus and trying to tell individual girls how important they are, then yeah, that's weird.
There's a world of difference between that and writing though which is not something people seem to get.

They're specifically talking about his social media presence.
Can I say that their statements have cause? I don't know, I'm not a girl and I don't follow him.

Okay but a LOT of this is just like entirely false pretenses
if you take the time to actually read or watch what John Green has said and done it's amazing how different he is from his strawman
at any rate at this point no one is actually trying to have a constructive critical dialogue about him. It's pure, bitter condemnation taking whatever form people think would be the most harmful to his reputation. There is nothing of worth.

(Just to get this out of the way now before this discussion gets derailed, I pretty much hate Bright Eyes, but he still didn't deserve that.)
this is a bad comparison
like, the magnitudes are so totally different that it just doesnt work
Yeah, that’s true.
It’s just these types of accusations should never be thrown around, even jokingly, because of the serious gravity they really should contain. I threw together a faulty comparison to try to make that point, when I should’ve just thought more carefully and simply said what I just said.

It's a completely petty reason, but I have no interest in hearing what a man who thinks "nerdfighter" is a good name for a group has to say.
I have no horse in this race. I am anti-horse. I have installed an application on Chrome that replaces all words for "horse" with "ridable goat." What's horse_ebooks?
there is zero dissent here that this is stupid and there isn't anything to be gained by just going "ugh, TUMBLR" over and over again.
i was thinking that i wanted to talk about the white african american studies NAACP hair stylist woman but then i got bored of it so here we are discussing johnny green in twenty fifteen

I think Johnny Green is actually a different person altogether.

The fraudulent woman is something I have even less of a horse with, because it's so far removed from anything I have experience or involvement with that the whole thing just seems to be alien and unreal.

Okay, you know what? Saying "This popular author feels pervy" on social media is an asshole thing to do, because pointed conversations in crowded rooms isn't the same thing as the internet.
But I'm an asshole. There are no crowded rooms for me to go to, no people I know to crowd the rooms that I can go to. I've honestly never had a pointed conversation about anyone in meatspace before.
If not on the internet, then where do assholes like me get to complain about people we don't like? Where is it safe to be an asshole?
Wicked is on my very short 'didn't finish because, seriously, screw this book' list.
Other proud members are the Mists of Avalon (for being boring as hell), Crime and Punishment (for being way too difficult for a 13-year-old), and a few others.

I apologize for that.
