Because using the number 9 broke applications that check the OS number, which is practically all of them.
It makes them all think Windows 9x -- i.e. Windows 95, 98 or Me -- instead of the successor to Windows 8. Hence, it was easier for MS to skip a number than go in and retroactively erase the traces of the old OSes from the framework.
this could have been solved very easily by not using numbers and instead calling it Windows XO

They're trying to put everything under one linked account so that everything on the laptop is under their control. It's another element of Windows 8 dumbing things down for people who don't really use computers.
But I'M a person what uses computers, and I like things connected to my gmail.

as someone who hasnt used windows in a while, can someone tell me:
- what happened to windows 9? did it exist? was it assassinated? is it the secret bonus windows? - why did windows 10 come out about three seconds after windows 8? - why did microsoft start using numbers instead of using other acronyms which could be mistaken for smilies, such as windows XD or windows 8D? - when is windows jeff coming out?

What amuses me is the Windows 9/Windows 95/Windows 98 conflicting thing wouldn't have been a problem if people had actually written their software correctly--i.e., using the internal version numbers instead of the marketing name.
Because Microsoft has been very careful to make sure not to repeat the internal version numbers.

Hypothetical Windows 9 = NT 6.4
Actual Windows 10 = NT 10.0
