I admit, I was a little afraid of CrazyGoggs finding me and making fun of my posts (especially since I said some dumb shit on Fetishes), but that never happened.
And those who cared advised me to tell my family, which I did, and from there my family worked with me until we found a way to make hings better.
I should really have gone to my family first, to those who cared and were there in the flesh to give in-person help. (well, they already knew something was up, but I was hiding the worst of it from them).
I'm grateful to have a family like mine. I'm also grateful to have friends like you guys.
This thing would happen where a poster would start agitating for positive change on TvTropes, and then the SA thread would take notice and cheer them on, and then the poster would get drunk on the praise and do something super stupid and get banned, and then that poster would join the SA thread and not be as welcome as they thought they would be.
I got mocked very little. Perhaps two or three posts? I remember at least one thing they quoted years ago, because it was in fact dumb, and I said my dumb things like anyone else. I mostly didn't exist to them, which was fine for me when I was self-conscious about that (which thankfully was not very long). Then I remembered they paid over fifteen dollars to post on an online forum and make fun of other nerds online, and mostly stopped caring about the hi-larious mockery.
I still want an SA account admittedly, but eh, it's hardly anything pressing.
The threads for mocking TVT on SA were horribly stupid and probably did far more harm than any good they did, and as Crystal observed, they paid real money just to get the chance to mock people. So I'm quite fine with sitting around and quietly laughing at them for doing so.

Okay, allow me to rephrase that: Paying actual money to get onto a forum is a little silly, but considering it's simply paying for social services (which I see as functionally equivalent to various video game services where you pay for extra online nonsense) to me, I don't find that inherently mock-worthy. It is that, combined with being random faceless people online, combined with mocking developing teens and adults, that I found ridiculous.
There were some okay folks, some obnoxious folks, and the usual. In a sense, I don't see them as any different than any other internet culture (to a degree), including ours. It's perhaps a bit too reductive, but I'm too tired right now to get into the nitty-gritty. Point being my earlier simplification was more than a little disingenuous, and I'm also opposed to counter-mocking.
Want to know how to show you don't care? By not caring. Which extends to not discussing things you ostensibly don't care about, generally speaking. At least, it's one consistent way of showing that.
I don't have much respect for SA and it goes well beyond that infamous series of threads.
In general from what I've seen the place tends to give off a sense of being too full of themselves or too convinced that they're somehow miraculously a better or more mature community thanks (in part?) to the paywall. But the fact that they think they are such is indication enough (though not the only indication) that they're not.
I think my name came up a few times but I don't remember being a significant target by any means. You can do a Google search for my screen-name on site:somethingawful.com and you can read it yourself.
I just don't much like them, and I have yet to know of anything that would be worse off without them.
Well they said I was right about everything, so clearly they've got some worth.
Heh.
Well my criticism of them has to do with their making a big deal of their "exclusive hangout" status.
Perhaps it's just not my style. I much prefer the friendliness of places like here or TVT.
Yeah, TVT's community is far from perfect but at least it's generally friendly and welcoming. And I like that.
This isn't a criticism of any particular person at SA, fwiw. Except possibly those people who were involved in said infamous TVT-mocking threads. I know there's a number of cool people who are both here and on SA. Atmosphere isn't the same as how any specific person behaves.
I cried at both of those (but not TGWTG), and the finales of Kamen Riders W, OOO, Fourze, Gaim, TTGL...basically do a big dumb sentimental thing and I will cry.
I cried pretty hard during episode 15 of TTGL. Still tear up every now and then.
Remember that time an overzealous poster posted two people's real names and faces, and accused them of being pedophiles on basically no evidence whatsoever.
And then one of the two people felt really terrible about this, and explained that he had been raped as a child and was deeply shaken by being accused of pedophilia on, again, no evidence whatsoever.
If you're talking about the time I think you're talking about, that was Nautatrol Rx posting that to troll the SA TVT thread, because he knew they would just take his word for it without questioning it and just eat it up (which they did), though that doesn't make what he did any less shitty and disgusting though.
Also, the other person he accused of being a pedophile apologist was JHM, so yeah incredibly shitty and terrible.
So I've been thinking about how I feel good about not needing to watch Quality TV, because it seems to lead to so much heartbreak and anger over something relatively trivial, and the highs don't seem to compensate for the lows. Also I can get what I want out of selectively picking a few shows that appeal to me for different reasons than what Quality TV watchers seem to love.
Then I realized this must be how asexuals feel about sexytimes.

To clarify, that last thought does not cause a reversal of previous thoughts, it's just interesting.
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Is nothing sacred? After banning skinny jeans a couple of weeks ago, the higher-ups at ISIS are now calling for an all-out ban on the Nike Swoosh appearing on anyone of its members in an effort to become the most swagless jihadist group in the world according to the Daily Mail.
This news comes from a pamphlet ISIS leadership is distributing that outlines the guidelines for what its followers should wear. Apparently, Nike was singled out among others for a few reasons: One militant follower compared wearing the Swoosh to wearing a Christian cross, while others say it was singled out due to its connection to a Greek goddess of the same name (who actually personifies victory, so I don't know why they would want to lose that connection). It also sounds similar to sexual phrases in Arabic. I guess that explains why I get a boner looking a fire kicks, but I'll save that for my next thinkpiece.
The question on footwear industry experts' minds now shifts to just who will snag that coveted debut ISIS collaboration? Adidas (who've previously worked with other much-hyped brands like the Nazis)? Reebok? Skechers? We'll update you as soon as we know more.

this, for me, except replace tv with anime, and remove the thing about asexuals
I could get into a debate with said jerk and point out that this observation holds true only because women are shopping more often than men and men are just as capable of splurging while shopping.
But that feels opinion-pushy, and I need to do it in a way that doesn't feel opinion-pushy.
I did get to use that one stinger there saying that citing this stereotype in this thread ironically proves it wrong.
Yet there's still at least one other person below re-citing the stereotype.

But, well, it turned out I trusted those who cared about me more than I feared those who didn't.

I like both.
Also Limozeen are great.
This is akin to paying someone to help to perpetuate a heaping pile of shit in the middle of the street.
To be fair to other folks at SA, though, I hear various SA mods ended up shutting down the TVT thread. Good for them.

in any case it was in pyf which especially back then was a spectacularly awful and frequently creepy subforum itself, so

To people who don't like anime, I probably do. But I just don't fit in with other people who do. I'm sorta stuck somewhere in between.
But I can't think of a way of bringing up my annoyance without looking like I'm pushing the issue.
