    Neat!

I could never stand the feel of them on my eyes.  Always wished I could do both Contacts and Glasses, and switch... you can't see my eyes very well in photos when I wear glasses.

I don't think arguing against creationism means you want to "take down" religion. I mean, Dawkins would want to take down religion, but that's in addition to anti-creationism.

Yeah, that's actually a really good position to have.

    Hmm.

I'll have to adopt this perspective.

    Thanks, Klino.

thaaaaat said there is definitely a lot of overlap between anti-creationism and anti-religiosity. if you're a scientist or scientist wannabe and your main experience with religion is people saying the grand canyon proves the Flood happened it's easy to overgeneralize, especially since you're a scientist and understanding religion in depth is not strongly related to your career, unlike geology.

that seemed like a pretty dumb tumblr argument, yeah

People do not seem to think switching to contacts is very cool.

You know, if Bill Nye, or Dawkins really wanted to do a good takedown on religion, really wanted to pick a fight that wasn't just the easy mode creationists he spends his time bullying; he'd do a debate with Wendel Berry.

Ken Ham challenged Bill Nye, actually.

oh, also creationists have a fair bit of political power in the US. they're hardly an underdog.
  • Under President Richard Nixon, a NIT proposal almost made it through Congress.[7]

tonight's gonna be one of those nights when i'm sad to go to bed alone
  • so uh, I turned on my computer after having it off for most of the day to give it a rest and two things happened

    1. a command prompt window with the name system32.exe briefly popped up, and then closed

    2. firefox opened itself, and showed me this:

    image

does anyone have any idea wtf the fuck?
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
I have no idea.  virus, maybe?
  • Possibly?

Yesterday I had some weird Russian porn popup open when I opened Firefox, but I just assumed it was some weird popunder ad I had gotten on *ahem* sites of a certain kind and forgot to close and it was just session restore opening it back up.

If it is a virus it's oddly unintrusive. The only thing odd I've noticed lately is my laptop running rather hot, and it's been doing that for like a month, whereas this only started yesterday.
  • Does anyone know of any anti-malware software that will not itself act as essentially malware?

I've had that problem with (off the top of my head) Malwarebytes and uh

what's that one with the four colored flag-lookin' thing as a logo?

    that one.

Anti-malware resorts to shitty things sometimes because the programs they're trying to remove resort to shitty things. It's kind of inherent in the design, sadly.
  • I would settle for something that won't try to install toolbars on my web browser.

ok yeah that shit's annoying, i usually turn it off in the installer

off the top of my head i don't know any free ones that don't install that stuff by default

    Yes

    I've been using
    my discretion.

Nah but in actuality I uninstalled ASV or whatever it was called a while ago and before yesterday haven't had any problems since.

    So nothing, technically.
  • Avira is what I was thinking of.

Other people seem to love it so maybe my experience was atypical, idk.
  • 7 rhymes with 11, but have you ever questioned why that is?

7 is 11's father, they are blood related.

    yeah, you got malware.

I use this and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I have never had any issues with MBAM either. What I remember is that when I installed MBAM at least 6-12 months ago (or longer?), installing anything unrelated to MBAM was entirely optional. Similar to FileZilla, which apparently also caught flak, but it's been just fine for me (I definitely
could have installed unnecessary non-FZ-related crap, though).

asymptomatic means not showing symptoms.  so the worm basically laid low for a while
  • I'm reinstalling malwarebytes as we speak.

    Siiiiigh.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    displaying no symptoms

i say this because i t hought the same thing once, that i didn't need AV if i was careful, and then i had to reinstall my operating system.

Hopefully I do not have to go quite that far.

I'm really bad about not backing up....any data? At all.

I've lost literally all of it like twice and I've still never gotten around to purchasing a backup harddrive.
  • kill living beings
if you don't have the scratch for a drive you might try some online service

Well of course it's slow. The dead rodents can't run in the little treadmill that helps it go faster, due to being dead.

this seems to be a mom thing

my mom used a mostly-broken Acer laptop (the same one I used to have, y'all remember how that went. Maybe) until it literally did not start anymore.

Her mom uses a Windows 98 that somehow still works. Probably because grandma's never had internet access.
