So I don't hate Touhou, but aside from the catchy tunes and the fact that Cirno thinks in base 9, I don't really understand it's appeal.
(I still support the fandom, though.)
Complex and pretty bullet patterns, nuanced gameplay mechanics, a really amusing cast of magical girls. I don't think the initial popularity spike was just because of the setting and characters; I think it was because EoSD was something unique and was also much more "accessible" than the big danmaku games of the time, and so what would have been an obscure game actually became a lot more popular than expected. I also think the series has managed to remain popular because it keeps trying new things and introducing new characters and developing its detailed setting, instead of getting stuck in a pattern of recycling the same stuff like a lot of big game series tend to.

yeah there was a really weird mix of snooty rich people, tourists from out of state or country who who can't handle other stores not stocking their favorite stuff, truck drivers, and people who just really like buying in bulk.
