As of 2014, there are numerous reports dating back to 2012 that the AVG SafeGuard Toolbar installs itself without the consent of the user, as a side effect of installing other applications. The toolbar program appears to cause significant RAM issues. Once installed, the toolbar is virtually impossible to remove: Its uninstaller does not function, and it re-installs if manually removed.

To be fair to this level of super-glue anti-virus protection, I remember getting a virus and the first thing it did was utterly gut my virus protectors. Like I went running to my programs in search of help and all I found was a pile of guts and code.

I've gotten good about avoiding viruses over the years, but I still run Avast! just in case I should ever happen across something shady
