  • I do note that Americans don't tend to realize that even more slaves were sent to Brazil than the US.  But in general awareness of the non-US history of the Americas is lacking.

The slave trade so influenced West Africa in other ways as well as the obvious.  It encouraged warlike nations by making war very profitable; the profits from the slave trade bought guns and ammunition thus adding a feedback cycle.  Some nations, like Dahomey, did exceedingly well from the slave trade, and the destabilizing influence of all of this is part of what makes West Africa a mess to this day.
  • Brazil has had an interesting history.

I think one of the reasons it's so rarely covered in American history classes is that it doesn't follow the narrative we're fed of "righteous democratic government overthrows evil monarchy to bring about social freedom". Much the opposite, in fact.

the correct term for a female person who portrays a character is "actor"

the correct term for a male person who portrays a character is "actor"

the point is, the term is the same

Fowler wrote a lengthy 'counter-protest' against this, in which he accused women of 'putting their own interests above those of the public' and encouraged the creation of feminine neologisms to refer to professions without an existing feminine designation.

i like to remind myself of this whenever Fowler is treated as the definitive last word on English prose style.

    That's really nice, Glenn.

According to Wikipedia it was recorded for Xenosaga but not used.  i feel like i've heard it before, but i can't place it.

Apparently I'm so out of the loop with DC that Giffen and deMatteis have brought back Ted Kord for another Blue Beetle and Booster Gold reunion and I totally missed it

At this point I don't know whether I should be glad or just be going 'what, again?'
  • The Mysterious Ballerina and her Tree Stump Ghosts
I mean, I like Ted, so I don't want to sound like 'waa they killed my fav character' but if we're getting to the point where you're bringing him back to life every 2 years for a Blue and Gold reunion, you might as well just, you know, bring him back for good.

Unless they have done this now. I should probably read it before posting tbf

    That's good!

Art vandalism kind of registers as very not funny to me.

    i mean

Just move it from the Impressionist section to the Avant-garde section and it'll be back to its old price

    is kind of funny

but still, not cool, painting-punching dude

of course 5 years is a significant chunk of someone's lifespan

i really am not capable of assessing a situation like this at all, like at all

the value of art and the value of human life do not even exist within the same spheres for me

I forget, actually, do either of you object to the gender-neutral "guys"? I keep forgetting not everyone is used to my Midwestern dialect >_>
  • I don't object to it.

In fact, early in my life I didn't even realize it was gendered until someone pointed it out to me one day.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i'm not going to be offended by the word

in the singular 'guy' is male to me

in the plural it's more neutral but still connotative of maleness

i'm aware that in your dialect it's different
  • five years is less than some rapists are sentenced to.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i see the word 'guy' used in direct contrast with 'girl' too often for me to think of it as gender-neutral.
  • at least he punched the painting in keeping with classical theories of the beauty of proportions

    like, i know this

    i know it's a disproportionate punishment

but at the same time, a unique art object feels... sort of sacred?

"guy" is often considered the "default" from what I can see.

    speaking of this

that raises another IJBM of mine

the whole idea of distinguishing between "bros" and "hos"

well there are several things wrong with it

    1. the term "ho", which is of course short for "whore", being used to refer to

    2. the idea that one cannot have friends of the opposite gender

    3. the male-centric view of the terminology, in general

4a. the idea that persons of the opposite gender are seen as sexual objects
4b. the idea of treating anyone as an object as opposed to a real person

    5. the notion of contrasting friendship with sexual relations

exactly, that sucks. every newspaper report on this mentionns that the painting was 'worth £8m'. i heavily endorse punching sacred art objects whenever possible
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
they'll probably repair it somehow and presumably people with a more classical or realist or abstract outlook would say it was a shit painting anyway

5 years is definitely not ok

but how exactly do you punish something like that?  i really have no idea
  • also i've taken to saying "y'all" instead of "you guys", when i feel the need to say "you guys"
  • i wonder, did the artists who made an entire exhibition out of small fragments they had secretly broken off well-known and valuable works of art ever get charged/fined/jailed
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i don't mean 'sacred' in the sense that it's being valued more than it should be

i mean actually sacred like you can't even put a price on it

    it's a relic

Segregation seems to delude people into thinking they are "part of something" at the cost of dehumanizing others. Much easier to make people do unspeakable things to others if they don't feel close to them.

I "y'all" when I'm tired or something, which is weird, because I'm not Southern :P

But "you guys" is too deeply embedded in me as the plural "you" to change it entirely
  • they did already restore it which sucks because iit was better after the guy had punched it.

That was not a dumb opinion at all.  i don't think it was even a controversial opinion?  At least not around here.

    Regardless, you're not dumb.
