Also re:illiberal, liberalism and colonialism/imperialism do not seem all that far removed to me.

At least, certain forms of liberalism seem decidedly Victorian and anti-SJ, and exceedingly self-congratulatory.
  • Mind you, some (IMO wrongheaded) strains of SJ manage to smack of colonialism as well (plenty of White Savior Complex going on).

Which forms of liberalism are you referring to?  I think I know what you mean but ...
  • kill living beings
can and have work imperialism into practically everything

Broadly, i guess, those that have accepted the narratives of neoliberal economists and of the Cold War, and spend more time attacking Marxists and activists than they do conservatives and reactionaries, while still framing their arguments in terms of the maximizing of equal opportunity, free thought, scientific progress and democracy.

You see people like this a lot on reddit, and to a much lesser extent, tumblr... they tend to identify themselves as liberals, but 'reasonable' or 'moderate' ones.
  • Also, people who accuse activists of having ulterior motives.

Frankly I'd describe those people as quite conservative, at least in American terms, no matter how they may see themselves.
  • "Escape (Pina Colada)" is basically about trying to hook up with someone on Craigslist.

i hate that argument because it's so stupid yet people seem to take some kind of enjoyment from it.

Activists are somehow dishonest, because they merely wish to elevate themselves socially by appearing enlightened, or because their views stem not from a belief in equality but from a belief in collective guilt, or because they only care because caring 'feels good'... add to that the related accusation that gets leveled at left-wing celebrities and academics: that they belong to a class of cultural elites and are thus hypocrites.

None of these, if true, would have any bearing on the arguments the activists put forward, but nobody seems to care so long as the perceived smug liberal elites are being taken down a peg.

    I'd play that game.

    That is how it is.

Heard this not two days ago from some old woman about how Obama only wants to let "the Mexicans" into our country because of his "liberal guilt".

I like how King Dedede is never a real threat in any game.

Has there ever been a bad Kirby game?
  • I have heard that the one(s?) made before they gave him the power theft gimmick are kind of bland.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Kirby's Dream Land is the only one that predates that. His very next outing, Kirby's Adventure, introduced it and it stuck.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
I am having such mixed feelings about Kick Master, because I like the architecture so much but it's just too hard.
  • For some reason that really doesn't strike me as something you'd know.

    Anyhow

Kirby is actually probably my favorite of the "classic" first party Nintendo franchises. I like a couple Mario games very much, but have no real love for the franchise as a whole.
  • I'd argue the stupid parts of online SJ are exactly what happens when activism becomes a social status activity rather than keeping its eyes on real goals.  However, this is a failure mode of activism, not the essence of it.

Really everyone has ulterior motives, so there is little point in accusing others of it general unless there is something that's on point to the actual argument.

I do get rather sick of parentally funded kid Marxists, though.  Not because they're not well-meaning, but because they're goddamn annoying.

Given that the alternative is simply being apathetic, or actively supporting the status quo, I'd still say it's an improvement.

Well, perhaps.  But then the valid criticism is that the activists in question have lost sight of their goals, not that their motives are dubious.  The former is a complaint about what they're doing, the latter is simply an ad hominem.

i'm not really disputing this, but when it gets to the point where people spend more time complaining about 'annoying' lefties than addressing actual inequality, you start to question their commitment to their stated principles.

Also, some of the things i've seen self-identified liberals dismiss have been pretty basic... that a poor black kid does not have the same opportunities as a moderately privileged white kid, for instance, or that Margaret Thatcher is not and has never been a feminist icon.
  • People often tell me that well meaning allies are actually more dangerous than people who outright hate you.

Given the antipathy I have had to live with, and seen other LGBTQ folks around me live with, I humbly disagree.

"Left" and "right" are limiting boundaries that ultimately contribute to the same horribly flawed political machine but at the same time I have no idea how you go around winning power to support your own position independent of the two extremes.

that happened a long time ago, but the fact of the matter is that the only reason I don't regularly receive more abuse is because most of the people I went to high school with don't frequent the same places I do anymore.

i use the term 'left' loosely; i identify with it, but i don't think it has anything much to do with the left as represented in current UK politics.
  • I wanna hear someone rap over "Dogma".

    idk who.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I don't know how you make your own political machine is what I'm saying.

I wonder if the left you identify with is primarily the American left. Which seems likely to me.

If by the American left you mean Democrats, absolutely not.

i think my values are fairly typically British, really.  Or at least, typical of certain parts of the UK.
