I don't care if they taste like they ambrosia from the defunct gods themselves (and they do), they should not cost 12 dollars with shipping and handling.
[2:57:02 PM] Magic Jane: I am going to be driven to the local McDonald
[2:57:08 PM] Magic Jane: but I will have to walk back by myself
[2:57:14 PM] Magic Jane: likely after dark
[2:57:26 PM] Magic Jane: on roads that do not have sidewalks
[2:57:28 PM] Magic Jane: this should be fun
i once walked to my voting location from home (and back), about 1.5 miles distance, of which about a quarter or third of a mile is on a road with no sidewalk. When walking back, it was after dark.
I went with a friend to AnimeUSA this year, who hates public transportation.
His reasons: * it takes a lot longer. * he usually buys a lot of stuff, and it's awkward to carry bags full of boxes of figurines on the subway.
My reasons for preferring public transit: * if I use public transit, i pay for my fare, and pay a little extra time (opportunity cost I guess). if i use my own car, i pay for the cost of using my car -- wear/mileage on the car (less visible) and gas money (more visible), plus the cost of parking in money AND time. (both of the local anime conventions are held in places where parking is in short supply.) basically, public transit cost < private transportation cost. * also, generally, the stress of having to worry about my car, and to drive. I have to find parking (though it's slightly alleviable by using some service to get parking beforehand such as Parking Panda), but more importantly, I have to drive there and back. On a subway train, I can sleep, I can chat, I can text, I can read, and various other things. This applies doubly so if I have to get up early and/or return late.
That the exurbs are both nigh-devoid of sidewalks and frequently full of inconsiderate drivers with bad attitudes makes them a real chore to live in. I mean really, who the hell drives everywhere anyway?
