i'm thinking of starting with famitracker, is this good idea? :D
sure
also once you get the hang of that you should upgrade to Renoise, which is essentially a tracker with all of the capabilities of a fully featured contemporary DAW
You should also try moving notes in a different direction from the bass. Contrary motion and oblique motion are your friends, and nothing hits emotional cues quite like a string of thirds or sixths.
And I think I'm done with this song. One down, two more to go until I can get the taste of brine out of my mouth forever.
thankfully, there are standalone EXE files that contain the soundtracks of Cave Story and Cave Story beta version, which can loop infinitely or cycle through the songs

I have been doing that too, to good results sometimes
i've actually learned a lot of music theory from this site, i like the fact that it explains things in a readily understandable manner and they use examples that electronic music people will be familiar with

I wish I knew what this meant
instead of bass and melody moving together in the same directions, have them move independently of each other.
bass being basically the bottom notes of the music, and melody being those catchy top notes that you hear most prominently.
also in case you're wondering, ORG Maker is the software that makes ORG (Organya) files
that's the format of music that Pixel created for Cave Story
it seems to have 16 channels of chiptunish sounds, if i recall correctly
That is interesting, tbh
And about piano roll, it's not too different from sheet music. The notes are replaced by bars. The length of a bar represents how long that note plays. The piano keyboard on the left determines the note that you're playing, and the...thing at the top tells you how the length of the note corresponds to the measure.
The bit with the string refers to parallel motion, where two voices move in the exact same way an interval apart. Usually the bane of every theory teacher from here to Russia, it works well when the interval is a third or a sixth. Can't be done with 5ths because of the inevitable voice-leading problems, which means they also can't be done with 4ths.

oh. well, I thought that was an obvious thing that everybody tries, I mean, I definitely have
and i think the music i write tends to be more through-composed -- like, i usually don't come up with repeating harmonic patterns
much less know how to handle percussion lol
I used to be that way. Now it's the other way around.
It doesn't have to be a simple 4-chord pop harmony. Just write a string of chords, make sure that the last chord can go back to the third chord, and arrange it rhythmically so you can make a melody for it all easy-like
anyone can appreciate burial but i still think unless you're a londoner you won't quite get it. not really. this isn't to say that your interpretation is less valid but there's a world of textures and meaning that... idk. its just london through and through

see when I first heard Untrue I didn't know Burial was British and it actually reminded me a lot of my time in Florida for whatever reason.
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I'm still jealous of all you people who live in places with trains.
Man, I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with OOTS but I remember the shit-fit that people on giantitp and TvT threw when it turned out that Tarquin was just a narcissistic man-child like his son

the advice you gave me for writing solos has helped some
so i have no experience working with a piano roll type of software
it doesn't seem to hard to actually use though
i've used ORG Maker a little bit
if only there were a better, easier-to-use version of ORG Maker
much less know how to handle percussion lol

note that ORG Maker does NOT ask you if you want to save, before closing
i dunno if it's been updated
probably not, though, since pixel did make another music format called pxtone
it kinda sucks that people have generally ignored the org format
not even the foobar2000 org player plugin works
