So, if people find habitable planets and find a way to go to said planets, I'm torn between wanting people to go and take a lot of the burden off of this planet; and wanting people to not mess up other planets.
Because, on the one hand, people wouldn't have to keep ruining, say, Australia.
On the other hand, people already ruined Australia.
On the other other hand, the Earth has ruined itself several times, most drastically at that one time when like everything died and it started with P.
On the other other other hand, where do those smug other planets get off all "OOH, I'm so much purer and less exploited than you, Earth. Don't mind me, I'll just be here all haughty and insufferable. Filthy earth-life, so glad it can't reach me.". Dang other planets.
Kraken, could you please refrain from making so many conversations about how some trivial thing is ever so dreadful? Because it's boring and I would rather talk about something interesting.
It's one of those philosophies that assumes that people are perfect and can always do the right thing every time. Thing is, none of us are Superman, and even the best and brightest make mistakes. Also, a lot of libertarian theories --- or at least the ones I've read about on RW --- tend to assume at least some vestige of the US government (or English jurisprudence of any sort, for that matter) will still be around, and in the sort of total anarchy they propose, there's absolutely no guarantee of that.
I keep imagining that the people that are really into guns and absolute freedom will just end up killing each other over petty squabbles (courts? what courts?), and some form of new government will form out of the mess to protect the people who don't buy in and just want to live their lives without having to fend off assassins.

That is not how the heap works! This is a place to talk about things one cares about, regardless of whether it is considered interesting.
The thing to do when you're in a mood like this is to put it through as many codes as possible.
That would be deeply dishonest, and I prefer to express my opinion. You want to say something and then make sure what no-one hears you? Don't say it, or tell someone else in confidence. Pussyfooting around things that bother you by putting them in code is cowardly and frankly more than a little insulting.
You're right. It is dishonest to say-it-but-not-say-it.
Also, I think there's a difference between expressing your opinion when you're not in a really bad mood and expressing your opinion when you are in a really bad mood. At least for me, when I'm in a bad mood, I tend to say things that I later regret.
You're right that encoding those things which I will later regret is not a good solution; and is not a good way to express that something is bothering me.
It was wrong of me to tell you not to talk about the things that bother you, and for that I apologize.
I still disagree with the basic sentiment that Kraken should stop posting about certain topics; but disagreeing is not the same as telling you to hide your thoughts in code. I'm sorry.
I didn't mean it in a "stop talking" way; I meant that I don't appreciate topics being derailed with complaints that are really about some unrelated bugbear. Especially if they're relayed in the "this is why this thing you are discussing is evil!" format.
In truth, I feel like the heap is missing or lacking in, the ability to hold a conversation with etiquette. We all tend to fall on fallacies and conversational dead ends. The ability to articulate without resorting to exaggeration or appeals to emotion and the like.
I don't think I've ever seen a single film with Benedict Cumberbatch in it, and much as I find the character of Dr. Strange interesting, I will probably not see this one either.
While that is an exaggeration, I do think that we could collectively afford to be a bit more polite and conscientious about how we articulate our opinions. I am included in this.

while we're on the subject can we cease describing everything as "boring"

Update: we stood out in Magruder Avenue for 15 minutes or so before they let us back in
A little annoying that we lost the time, but it was kinda amusing at least

This is something of a joyous update, but the Horsemen of War is gone. In such a manner I suppose the end of the world has been averted, but the Horsemen of Famine has a very dangerous friend known as Gluttony, and they are raising hell in metaphorical sense.
The domain of war is no more, but the power gap created is very real.

Why are for-profit corporations even allowed to exist
The corporation as a system of company organisation has plenty of uses. The main issue is corporate personhood, not that corporations exist—at least at this stage.
Eh, corporate personhood just means that corporations can be sued, which is something I'd like to keep, thank you very much. The real issue is there's no political will to actually punish corporations and high-ranking executives.

I say we ban any sort of profit-motivated entity from existing
Not really, no. You could still sue a company if it weren't a legal person. People were suing corporations long before anyone took corporate personhood seriously. The only thing that corporate personhood really does is allow people running corporations to diffuse blame for bad decisions and pour money into campaigns and do other similarly unpleasant things with impunity.
