To be fair to Marx, he created his concept of "alienation" in a time when most work was slave labour or near-slave labour.

It still doesn't excuse the adherence of modern Marxists to the idea, but it does explain why it made so much sense to Marx.

Oh yeah I get that, but the thing is that it seems to be the glue that holds his ideas together, so any sort of modern marxism should have to radically alter itself to be ideologically consistent and i don't really see that
