i'm still slightly pissed that pro-gun jerks were able to recall two dem colorado state senators over gun legislation (or rather, what they perceived as oh-so-extreme restrictions on guns).

this isn't the only election result i'm still slightly pissed at, of course.

but this is politics, where you take your losses and move on to fight the next battle.
  • ironically, despite electoral politics being an endless series of battles, you have to fight every battle as if it is your last battle.

because policy comes out of election results.  and those policies will be someone else's last battle.

    And his cowboy hat.

Maybe there's something wrong with me, but the sheer blazing offensiveness of the photograph just makes me laugh whenever I see it. It goes beyond mere tastelessness into this realm of pure absurdity in the same way that Whitehouse's early work often does and I cannot help cracking up despite the fact that all logic dictates that I should be wincing or shaking my head.

Now, the Jell-O tiki thing just makes me smile. That one is so wrong that it's right for completely different reasons.

I swear our work shirts are deliberately designed to be as uncomfortable as possible. They're made from thick cotton, so they're too hot to wear in summer, but they have short sleeves, so they're too cold to wear in winter.

I remain convinced that "wearable computers" (i.e., watches that have some version of Android on them) are a fad that will die out within a year or two
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Maybe? I get the feeling that they will just metamorphose into something more specialised and sophisticated, perhaps for professional use. Like some weird marriage of Google Glass, Android watches and PDAs, but less ostentatious and more efficient.

Things that annoy me: The phrase "vocal minority".

It is overused, but sometimes it's worth making the distinction... although the people to whom one might be making the distinction are often unlikely to accept it because their biases only make them see that segment of the population. See: People who think all feminists are Valerie Solanas worshippers, etc.
  • image Wee yea erra chs hymmnos mea.
The issue I have with it is, whether intentional on the part of the speaker or no, it holds the unspoken implication of "Well, they're a minority, so it's not worth listening to them anyway.", which is obviously dangerous ground to tread.

I've always been kind of weirded out by people passing off the SCUM manifesto as parody. I mean she did shoot a guy around that time.

There is a difference between a minority in the sense of people who simply diverge in characteristics or opinion (Roma, socialists, people who really liked the third season of Veronica Mars) and a minority in the sense of people whose actions and beliefs explicitly involve alienation and intense hostility towards outsiders (TERFs, National Front members, general creeps). Now, some members of the former may adopt aspects of the latter due to fear of persecution, but there is an obvious difference, and in any case your right to say that certain people are assholes is protected in the same way that their right to be assholes is protected.

She shot Warhol because she was obsessed with him and felt rejected because he didn't respond to her sending him her manifesto - she meant it as a shock text and a rant against men who had mistreated her throughout her life; he thought it was an FBI plant's attempt to bait him - so she ultimately snapped and decided to get famous by shooting him and some other people. And guess what.

Like, Solanas was dangerously unstable and angry, but she was as much starved for fame and pissed off at the world at large as she actually hated men.

    Interesting assertion.

The problem is, of course, is that the better part of the left also speaks for those who have lost privilege and status, assuming that they have fallen far enough, because no human being should be beneath the heel of another. The difference is that where the reactionary wishes to restore an older version of an oppressive order, the revolutionary desires to make a world where such orders cease to exist and all provide and are provided for.

Corey Robin is firmly anti-reactionary, in case that wasn't clear.
