To state the obvious, I think that looking back at what could have been is not all that helpful since it moves your focus from the present, which you can change, to the past which you cannot (absent time machines). There are tons of different paths to success (some of which meander all over the place); the fact that you did not become the next Doogie Howser does not mean that you are somehow doomed to an unfulfilling life.
Also, I would honestly prefer to interact with someone who is down to earth but spent over a decade in college than someone who is a super genius but picked up a snobbish attitude somewhere along the way.
I do usually consider that the benefit of suffering that I end up accumulating.
My particular viewpoint on the world is the unique outcome of every mental breakdown and sucky decision I've made. Being better than what I am would cost me, well, myself, and as much as I hate what I am, I'd hate giving up what I am more.
