It strikes me that the only truly funny things about TvTropes are Fast Eddie's madness and dumb entries in the wiki.
Everything else is just depressing, okay, or uninteresting.
Pretty much.
As of this point, all the really appalling stuff is in the past, and all that remains is either old hat or just fairly ordinary "site full of teenagers with bad admins" stuff.
You know, even if it was at times a bit clunky I am quite fond of TvTropes's simple markup.
The forum's markup system is actually pretty elegant in its broad strokes, but it's more a holdover from the wiki itself (which borrows heavily from Wikipedia's system) than a special forum thing.
The idea that certain types of posting are akin to a physical resource that must be contained in certain areas so as not to contaminate the rest of the site is very strange to me.
I mean, I saw goons going "How can you hope to categorize something as surprising and original as fiction" and "Tropers are like auditors from Discworld!" which is just silly
The problem is the way that it presents the patterns in question when discussing a work, and likewise the way in which it discusses examples in works when discussing said patterns. Lists with only the barest contextual information that do not explore the meaning of what is listed are not very valuable outside of very specific contexts and only have a limited amount of entertainment value for those not doing the listing.

I do like the way it can introduce a work in a more personal way that lets you get what is actually attractive about the work, due to the informality of the site.
(Also: The people who assume that tropes and archetypes are building blocks rather than patterns or devices and treat TVT as a blueprint collection, but those who do thankfully tend to be disabused of this notion quite quickly by fellow users.)

That is true, but a more in-depth, minimally list-y format could do that better.
I've long had a vision for a site that would talk about media tropes and idioms in an academic but informal way while avoiding tiresome list-making, but that's pretty hard to get off the ground even with a decent staff and user base.
i've decided that anything with tvtropes's "concept" would have to be so remotely different due to the "not lists" stuff that it's not worth connecting to tvtropes
why do we occasionaly start randomly hating TVTropes, a site none of us have been actual active users of for a long time
it's rather weird
I'm still there because of inertia, but my investment in the site is pretty low at this point. I'm happy to have met the people that I did through it, but I'm kind of tired of it overall. It's not a horrible site, but it's just not that amazing either. The wiki is an OK way to find new stuff, but it's also fatally flawed, so... meh.

I read through the FuckNoTvTropes tumblr.
Which doesn't say anything stupid and they seem like a nice person, but it's weird that they still care when so much of TvTropes drama is depressingshit
I mean Fighteer kicking out people for suicidal ideation is BAD but it's not funny.

True enough.
I think my ideal would be more like an actual wiki cyclopaedia with some elements of discussion and opinion.
Like, one of the hosts made a reference to reading books about dinosaurs as a kid, except he accidentally pronounced it as dinosaurds. This led to a five minute digression about an eighties TV show in which "On the plains of imagination, Robot Cowboys fight with Dino-Swords", and this fanart
...
I am sad nobody but me listens to podcasts that aren't Nightvale.
Reposting because I just found out the guy who mispronounced it "Dinosaurds" is now the head writer on The Daily Show.
TvTropes is decent if you're familiar with the thing being discussed, I think. If you aren't familiar with it it also gives a good lens into what the fandoms are like.

Freezair and I were talking about doing something like this a while ago, but we let the idea slide when we realised how much work it would be.

honestly idgaf about TVT anymore at this point apart from that above point

One could argue that the two traits were interconnected.
In any case I really don't feel like talking about the guy. Who wants to see screenshots of Europe.
