So have I told you the story of the guy who lent me his PSP to play Birth by Sleep and then how my older brother "bought" it for like 65 bucks but really waited weeks to even pay 30 dollars of that and then when the time came to pay the rest told me to cover for him (using all of the money I had remaining of my 50 dollar prize for winning a writing competition) and that he'd pay me back 40 dollars in a few days when he got his pay.
That was in the middle of April. I have yet to see any money.
Does he have the money to pay what is owed?
Of so, ask politely for it.
If he cannot, set a date a few weeks distant to give him time to raise funds.

To recap in layman terms, this girl uploaded a clear of the hardest mode of a brutal Cave danmaku, something that maybe a dozen players or less in the world can do. Expert players watched it, decided it was full of impossible near-misses and demonstrated an overall lack of game knowledge, and eventually determined that pause-buffering was used, which, while technically allowed, is frowned upon. It was said that, because online score play allows this, Cave doesn't fully understand their player base (more and more so in these latter years, perhaps, since Cave is finally falling apart). It's true: Cave was always a small developer struggling to stay afloat financially, and only made their games so difficult due to pressure from publishers and players; they wished instead to experiment in their genre and make more accessible games. To prove a point, another expert player submitted a fake score with no proof and only revealed this a week later. It was pointed out that known (male) cheaters continue to get fishy replays "accepted." Some suspected this girl was only pretending to be a girl to get special attention (quite possible in my opinion, but I don't like to cast doubt), and it was pointed out that girls do get special attention, demonstrably so by males who pretend to be female online for exactly that reason: better treatment in a game. I'm not sure where I am going with this. *shrug*
More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
Some people are arguing that if you pause the game, it shouldn't count. Some people are arguing that if you used save states or level select simply for private practice sessions, your entire output shouldn't count. I don't see any drama like this in the Touhou community, but that is a more small and isolated scene, and Touhou games have built-in rules for replay saving, so there is nothing to argue about. Sometimes an unmarked TAS will get "flagged" but that is about it.

This kind of thoughtless, extremist elitism is one of the WORST aspects of the gaming community as a whole.

A scoreboard is a passive competition. A lot of shmup fans are from a time before emulators and whatnot and some of them haven't even adapted so well to norms in the current shmups fandom, I guess.

From a competitive viewpoint, it isn't any of those things to want rules. Just, people have different ideas about what is fair and what isn't. Some will gleefully save state and TAS and lie about it. Others will even consider emulation invalid altogether because the hardware slowdown isn't 100% exact.
you are talking about people who are presumably grown men analyzing some video and throwing hissy fits because someone might've faked a score. Maybe.
You might care a bit more if you devoted hundreds of hours towards perfecting your game. I don't think it's unreasonable at all to cast doubt on someone who doesn't seem to be playing the same game you are, and it isn't throwing a "hissy fit" imo. Allowing a cheat replay to go unchallenged not only sullies all that beautiful effort and technique, but also gives an inaccurate picture of the game to outsiders and makes it look bad. It's also usually obvious to an expert when a novice is cheating.

Really that thread more became a discussion about fair competition, and a lot of the people posting aren't saying things like "no pausing, ever." It's interesting to me.
When Miko talks about gaming competition, it is probably best to read it (if at all) with the assumption that Miko, and other people involved, enjoy organized competition.
And it looks like the laptop's back into being out of commission for now.
Good news is I have a decent idea about what I'd need to do in order to fix it. Bad news is that it'd put me out 50 dollars. So I'm going to toy with what I've got and hope that I don't have to spend more money than I have to.

I didn't actually say outright that it was mediocre I just said I didn't understand the point of it if all it did was make me want to do two other things (play LSD and listen to Boards of Canada).

If Imipolex G likes Treasure, maybe we should play Ikaruga. :p
