with Nas it's kind of impossible not to because Illmatic's impact and his reaction to that impact has completely defined his output since, and everyone else's reaction to that output.

one thing i think is a huge problem with people discussing media is that people don't actually disagree a lot of the time, they just perceive things differently.
like, clipping. is definitely directly inspired by Death Grips and exists because Jonathan Snipes wanted to do something cool with his buds, and Daveed Diggs is a rather unremarkable MC, but i don't really care about Daveed's vocal abilities or their authenticity, I just hear fun music with some ok rapping dude that i can filter out if he's being boring or tune into when he's throwing in an amusingly incongruous hook or some lyrical imagery that fits nicely. so even though i agree with mo to a degree on things, we are listening for different things so we arrive at different opinions.
