at the point you abandon drum programming you're just being a stick in the mud.
Mo, I don't think you believe in other people being allowed to have fun.
I mean, to each their own, but I would not describe clipping as "fun"
They're usually loud and their lyrics are usually dark, but their sound design and choices of juxtapositions and lyrical conceits are very fun. You just have to take a step back.
But really, saying, "If it does not have straightforward drum sounds it cannot be hip-hop," is more than a little presumptuous. And you used "barely a rap group" rather than "barely a hip-hop group," which given Daveed Diggs' demonstrable spitting ability would be disingenuous even if you accepted the premise that they are not, in fact, hip-hop.
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I think they are bad, you can disagree with me if you want to.
You haven't even made an argument other than, "I don't like them because they are noisy and their beats do not use drums."
It's like you're trying to piss me off here.
It's because I don't feel like having an argument.
I also didn't actually say they were noisy, but, details.
I am trying to avoid having to explain at length why I don't like rap group x because I have these same discussions all the time on reddit and elsewehre and after a while you want somewhere where you don't have to explain at length why you don't like Somebody Favorite Rapper. It gets annoying.
like the middle of the album is really strong but both ends are kinda weak.
and tbh when your rap album has enough tracks that there's a middle there's already an issue unless you're MF DOOM making hookless songs that are like a minute and a half long.

You already started one.
You are irritating me far more by saying nothing than you would be by simply saying something that I disagreed with. You are actively putting me in a worse mood. You have already spoiled my good mood by being an obnoxious snob and you are actually making me angry now.

fine, here, you want a breakdown of reasons why I don't like clipping., have it:
the beats are just straight-up bad to my ear. They are non-traditional, yes, but so are Madlib's, FlyLo's, etc., experimentality is not bad, but there's that old adage about having to know the rules to break them, and I get the distinct impression that if clipping.'s producer ever knew them, he's since forgotten. And yeah, drums are important to hip-hop music. They don't have to be the loudest thing in the entire track, they don't even have to knock, but some kind of rhythmic centerpoint that is easily identified is basically a necessity unless you are literally freestyling acapella.
their MC (whose name I do not recall offhand) is the very definition of competent but uninteresting. His lyrics fly through my ears and I am not compelled to pay attention to any of them. This is a problem you usually see with old school-aping rappers like Joey Bada$$ and Logic, so it is admittedly rather unique to see it in this context.
in general their music gives me the impression that some group of people very cynically decided to cash in on the success of things like Death Grips and Yeezus by being weird enough to appeal to people who don't listen to a lot of hip-hop but not hip-hop enough to actually contribute meaningfully to the genre. I am not psychic, but I get the impression that it is all very deliberate, even if it's not, that's a bad sign.
and that, sir, is why I do not like clipping.
I'm sorry that I upset you, but please understand that I literally hate writing lists like these because that is what makes me feel like an obnoxious snob. I hate having to outline in detail why I hate stuff, people doing that is like half of what's wrong with the internet.
Lastly, I didn't actually call clipping. bad until you got on my case about it. I initially just said that their beats are nontraditional (which is very true regardless of how you feel about them) and were thus not perhaps the best thing to recommend to Imipolex as representative of the genre (even its more underground components).
