re: difference between "he" and "she:" it's a facet of the English language that, functionally speaking, separates any given population into a binary. I don't care how one thinks of either side of that binary as much as I care about which side I am being forced into. It is a source of discomfort to be told I can't be with the "she's" because I have to be with the "he's," if that makes sense. The "he" and "she" groups are visibly and observably different, even if we say something like that the only differences are physical and socially learned.

I saw the homosexual sheep post at the bottom of the page.  Was cool. :)

And, ah, in that case I did understand you correctly.

we have agreed that those bridges were cool

the film felt kinda incomplete to me

i grew up with tintin and im not sure where this sentence was going

Yeah, we did agree on that.

Also, well, I grew up with Tintin, too.

It felt incomplete because it combined several different Tintin stories, instead of just telling The Crab With Golden Claws or The Secret Of The Unicorn, or Red Rakham's treasure. Also, it had to introduce audiences to Tintin because modern society doesn't know Tintin nearly as well as it should.

Seriously, though. I would watch the heck out of a Thompson and Thomson movie.

    Same.

People act like I shouldn't care one way or the other but IT DOES MATTER TO ME.

Actually, wait, Sredni, I think I misunderstood you.

When you say trying to brush off transgender and other phenomena as purely psychological is reductive, that's as opposed to what?

"Psychological" is the wrong word. Maybe "sociological" or "socio-psychological" would be more accurate?

Also, I think my sheep post might have been missed.
    and now I'm a bit confused :v

also I think my post was missed too

would you prefer if English had a unisex non-object third person pronoun instead?

But do you feel the groupings exist (i.e. are defined by meaningful distinctions) nevertheless?

    Same here.

It's something that I really want to understand but it's hard to discuss it without making myself look stupid or offensive.

That would be ridiculous but hilarious. Maybe. If you could get the right material.

And yes, I watched the animated Tintin adaptation when I was little as well, and my mother read the comics when she was a wee one.

Pronouns in themselves don't seem very important to me. It's what they represent that matters.

But do you feel the groupings exist (i.e. are defined by meaningful distinctions) nevertheless?

The simple answer is 'yes', but I'm not sure what you mean by 'meaningful'. I think the distinctions are definitely made, and are reinforced by various behaviours and institutions, and there are clear differences that can be pointed to, but that doesn't mean I like these things or think them useful.

Well, me too, but I still consider that formative.

It's where my old jokes about chloroform came from.

Still, in my opinion no one should ever have to call themselves a pronoun and not have the corresponding sex hormones. The "fake transsexual who wants hormones but won't benefit from them" is a fictional character. ANYONE who wants to change their body like that is someone who will benefit from it, because anyone cis would never consider that, just about, and certainly not seriously enough to approach a doctor and persist in it. There are major consequences of doing this. I think someone who wants to do it, and pursues it, is pretty fucking sure. It angers me so much that, even after being "out of the closet" for so long, even after changing the way I present myself, I don't have the appropriate body or brain chemistry. Absolutely no one, ever, should have to go through this. No one deserves to have to say to someone else "I am Miss ___" and be, by all corporeal appearances, a Mr. ___.

Do you think the world would be a better place if these distinctions didn't exist?

(again, open question, i don't mean to sound argumentative)

    The comics are classics!

My grandpa collected them in Swedish during the second world war, and my uncles bought the English translations, so as a little Rozzy learning to read, I'm not sure which I remember being able to read first, though I was never ever fluent in Swedish (then again, as a little kid, nobody is really fluent in English, either.).

Id kinda like to see it in the original Flemish or French, whichever Hergè wrote in.

You know, that was my best opportunity to really learn Swedish and I blew it. Stupid very young Rozzy.

@ Glenn: Truth be told, I've sometimes wished it.

But the fact is they do exist, and I don't know what would really happen in a made up world in which they didn't.  Maybe it'd be a terrible thing.

^^ French. Herge was from southern Belgium.

Also, I firmly believe in allowing children and teenagers knowledge of and access to HRT. Pre-puberty HRT is a fuck ton more effective, because there is only one puberty, not two. The MTF won't have body hair and a throat lump and a deep voice. The "fake transsexual child who insists for years they are the other gender but would suffer from a sex change" is a fictional character. Most children do not want to change their gender!!!!

I agree with both of your sentiments Miko, if it helps

in a more perfect world no one should have to hide their true gender identity without repercussions from people that think they know more about you than you do
  • rice porridge ingredients:
    rice
    water
a few pieces of scallions and garlic

this is nearly completely bland, as you might imagine.

i added a seasoned "garlic-flavored beef log summer sausage" to it.  it's one of those weird sausages that come from those big christmas gift boxes of sausages, cheese, etc.

bite off a bit of sausage, add a spoonful of porridge

    suddenly, very flavorful

now just imagine how concentrated that flavor was in the sausage itself
  • and i should really shut up about gender stuff at this point but i just wanted to comment that it seems that gender identity is a thing that can change over time

gender identity, not really - it can be initially misunderstood by oneself and others
gender expressions, however, are quite flexible depending on how progressive the society is

Well, what is gender identity?  I'd take it to mean the gender you identify as, right?

For the record, since I realize I'm sounding like some horrible strawman set up to discredit trans issues, I never at any point identified as a girl.  I just wanted to be one.

Don't blame yourself. A child's mind is fragile and is pushed around endlessly by its environment. It's perfectly normal to not even know that there is a different option until adulthood because of misinformation, low visibility, etc. (see: me).
