For some reason I kinda want to write about the school from this morning's dream in which one of the classrooms connected to some kind of tower

To be fair, there is something to be said for saying awesome stuff with a limited vocabulary.

Things I'm getting tired of: That commercial where they pretend people can't recognize the new Buicks as Buicks

GM never does anything but follow trends when it comes to car designs and these damn Buicks are no different

    I thought so too

    Then CHRYSLER captured my imagination

unrelatedly: anyone know why Steam would be having trouble connecting?  I never used Steam before, but I just want my games that i paid for...

no but seriously, what is with that graph with the vocabularies?  this is going to bug me forever

also steam is being a massive pain in the neck and i don't understand why so i am not in the best of moods right now, so my inability to interpret this graph is causing me irrational anger

Is anything else having trouble connecting?

great, now i seem to have got myself locked out of Avast!, too

Usually my response when I have a computer issue is to google it and see if anyone else has had it.

This is obvious, but sometimes people forget to do it so eh.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
nothing else *was* having trouble connecting, but i don't know what's up with avast

i clicked the 'disconnect' thing, then avast was still running so i figured that probably wasn't what i meant to do, so then i tried to reconnect and it wanted a password which i can't remember, so i asked to reset my password, clicked the link in the email, was told the process would continue in avast, but instead avast got stuck on a blank page for some reason
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
really i have absolutely no idea what i'm doing on this computer like 90% of the time, and whenever i look for other people having the same problem it's either not relevant to me or it's in complete gobbledegook computerspeak

    Sounds annoying.

oh come on, Naney and Aliroz and Sredni were apparently able to draw conclusions from that graph, is it nice to keep me in the dark like this?

"This operation should continue in avast! Antivirus. Feel free to close this window."

That's the entire content of their password recovery page.  Like, literally their entire content.  No instructions for if the operation *doesn't* continue.

    Real helpful

AVAST forum offline due to attack

The AVAST forum is currently offline and will remain so for a brief
period. It was hacked over this past weekend and user nicknames, user
names, email addresses and hashed (one-way encrypted) passwords were
compromised. Even though the passwords were hashed, it could be possible
for a sophisticated thief to derive many of the passwords. If you use
the same password and user names to log into any other sites, please
change those passwords immediately. Once our forum is back online, all
users will be required to set new passwords as the compromised passwords
    will no longer work.

This issue only affects our community-support forum. No payment, license, or financial systems or other data were compromised.

We are now rebuilding the forum and moving it to a different software
platform. When it returns, it will be faster and more secure. This forum
for many years has been hosted on a third-party software platform and
how the attacker breached the forum is not yet known. However, we do
believe that the attack just occurred and we detected it essentially
    immediately.

We realize that it is serious to have these usernames stolen and regret
the concern and inconvenience it causes you. However, this is an
isolated third-party system and your sensitive data remains secure.

    All the best,

    Ondrej Vlcek

    COO AVAST Software

    well dang

ok, i shan't worry about that for now, i guess

I thought maybe it was supposed to just be a fun bit of trivia, but the juxtaposition of Twilight among those classic works of literature seems to suggest someone was actually trying to make some kind of point about the former

The use of varied vocabulary does not automatically make a work technically skilled or well-plotted, although works with those qualities, especially older works, tend to exhibit a fairly varied vocabulary.

Also, note frequency of new words relative to length.

So, this is pretty cool so far. Experimental dark ambient house, I guess you'd call it?
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
OK... i guess i was just confused since i wouldn't particularly expect a varied vocabulary to correlate with strong plotting or any other positive attribute

Me neither. But it's still funny to see confusing verbiage with depth so coolly mathematically rendered.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i suppose... is that a common misconception?

update on steam: disabling avast did not fix the problem.  opening with tcp instead of udp did not fix the problem.  bewildered here
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
wait, i'm an idiot - it could be the university isn't allowing it, couldn't it?

if so that's disappointing, since i just paid to download a whole bunch of RPGMaker related accessories and now I can't download RPGMaker itself

and i suppose the humble bundle will expire before i go home and i'll have wasted my money.  hmph
  • once you buy a humble bundle you can access it whenever.

sounds pretty strictly percussion-light techno to me.

^^ oooh really? i'm an idiot

well, thanks.  that's a huge relief, honestly
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”

sounds pretty strictly percussion-light techno to me.

    Either way, I enjoy it.

It does get a little more percussive and sample-y as it goes on, but it keeps the eerie lo-fi vibe.
  • you know what's really hard

explaining the difference between house and techno

because they are definitely different things, but there isn't like a set of characteristics that you can point to to distinguish the two
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
re: the bar chart, i think it would be more interesting if they'd used a larger sample size

as it is the ratios of words to unique words are all in roughly the same ballpark so it's not clear whether the data means anything much, to me

i feel like this regarding metal and alt metal

    Absolutely true.

I would say that this has strong shades of both, but you are right that it does feel more like a techno record as far as the actual beat timbres and textures go... although there is a kind of basement tape house vibe going on in the slowed-down sounds and samples, and how some of the tracks progress can really go either way.

I kind of hate Todd In The Shadows right now, because Groove Is In The Heart will not leave my goddamn head.

What a coincidence! I was about to watch that, after I finished listening to Lou Reed's "Goodnight Ladies".
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Sometimes I worry that Hanna-Barbera funny animal cartoons and Tom and Jerry aren't really objectively better than UPA or Rocky & Bullwinkle or the work of Total TeleVision because nostalgia biases me towards the former
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Does that matter, if you enjoy them?

    My sympathies.
  • I had a sneaking- mostly baseless- suspicion it was because my mom doesn't like her but the stated reason was because she didn't have any room to run around, which I kind of agree with but it's still disappointing.

Either way, it's tough... sorry you had to do that, Kex.
