When I play Pokemon and do a normal playthrough I play as the boy character, but if I'm doing a Nuzlocke I choose the girl. You needed to know this interesting fact about me.
I do something similar; when I play Spelunky normal playthroughs (i.e. trying to maximize treasure), I play the Spelunker character, but when I play speed runs, I play the Damsel character. I mainly do this just for the subconscious visual cue to remind me which one I'm doing, since stuff tends to fly by either way and the only difference is what items/enemies/objects I go for.
I still don't understand why you won't play Spelunky HD.

i need a term that consists of [adjective] [plural noun (that doesn't necessarily mean anything by itself and can just be a nonsense word) that sounds like a real English-language name]

been there done that
even the heated rename debates
i still have opinions
i have a friend who likes heavy metal but doesn't like (so to speak) faggy anime games
