The Sonic 2006 soundtrack is really good, and actually works a lot better as a standalone album than as music in the game itself.
to be fair, that's 'cuz the game is crap
Even aside from the crapness of the game, the songs feel like they were written as standalone tunes first and then edited into background music after the fact. Particularly "Crisis City", "Kingdom Valley", and "End of the World". As songs they sound great. In the game, the songs are chopped into pieces and divided across several sub-levels. Those looped fragment get old fast without the rest of the songs.
Honestly I think gameplay concerns should run secondary to concerns of narrative in games driven by narrative (although the reaction button did sort of detract from the gameplay at points, certainly). Yes, I just said that, go ahead and mock me, Miko.
I think that gameplay that works is a must, but it doesn't have to be the number one highlight, if it's an artsy game (see: Off, which follows a very straightforward jRPG model, but stands out because the art direction is awesome).
I have forgotten, too many people have spent hours talking about being experience-creators that the spirit of art has flown away from our lonely planet
