In Calculus I, they taught us that
d/dx(e^x) = e^x
and, for some constant a,
d/dx(a^x) = (a^x)lna
But, somehow, the latter never clicked for me until I realized that they're both the same thing

no, this is good. exponentiation on irrational numbers is in fact usually defined this way. i.e. you define a^x to mean e^(x*ln(a)). and obviously the derivative follows from the latter expression by the chain rule.

I also cross the letter Z and the number 7, though I try to limit that to contexts where they might reasonably be confused for 2 or 1 or T.

Okay, maybe I won't exterminate humanity. Maybe I'll find a different, uninhabited planet (terrible word for "world". So garish, Latin, and utterly lacking in any real thing-I-don't-know-the-word-for-but-french-has-a-term-for-that-thing-when-you-don't-know-what-it-is-but-it-is-a-definite-characteristic.) and have life there with all descendants of the archosaurs (except birds, who probably don't want to come because they're snooty like that) dominant.
