By "unfair" I mean "the game will randomly decide to arrange hitboxes in such a configuration that there is no possible way to maneuver to safety, regardless of how protected your ship is, because nearly everything pierces your shield, and when this happens you will die and lose all your power-ups and any chance of the game arranging itself into an escapable configuration is quenched." It is just pure luck. It's terrible. This is not even mentioning the way that the slowdown fucks with your ship speed when you're dodging split-second insta-death lasers.
