What I find particularly interesting is that there is a movement to exclude black people who are not descended from slavery from the term 'African-American'. People like e.g. Barack Obama, Colin Powell, etc.
There's also that tendency of white people to insist on labeling anything relating to black people as "African-American" instead of, you know, "black".
Never did quite understand that, myself...
Fear of offending somebody?
In the case of what AAVE actually is, the term is accurate: Certain odd, otherwise antiquated Southern accent qualities hang on in predominantly black communities where the people are directly descended from former slaves who headed north during the Reconstruction. But in other cases... it's just weird. If you're a dark-skinned person of Haitian or Brazilian heritage living in America, being called "African-American" really doesn't make much sense at all.

Technically speaking, someone whose father is from Kenya is more "African-American" in heritage than the vast majority of black Americans, whose ancestors were taken over here as far back as the mid-1600s... which, amusingly, also highlights the fact that African-descended people have been in the Americas longer than the ancestors of most of the people in organisations like the KKK.
(It's incidentally also really myopic as far as the suffering of others goes. I mean, slavery in the US ended fairly late, but the Belgian Congo was a de facto slave state into the twentieth century. Really, it's not quite tantamount to the hypocrisy of a Jewish person denying the Armenian Genocide, but it's pretty clueless.)

Oh, you'll be able to tell when it's April Fools here~
The reason I hate it is because Pennsylvanians for some reason take April Fools' way too far.
Last year somebody up here busted open a fucking fire hydrant as a prank. And when I say busted I don't mean they opened it, I mean they somehow broke it.

I'm thinking about stage magic for some reason
I was always the kind of person who sits and tries to work out how the tricks are done
Which makes me feel as though I'm missing the point, somehow...

i don't think it's offensive (don't quote me), it just sounds stupid
and they don't speak with the AAVE dialect
whereas people all over the world use African-American slang, because America imports media everywhere

I don't care if you took a quiz about which Wreck-It Ralph character you are, nor do I care what the results were.
It is very 999-ish
i remember when April Fool's was fun, when trusted news sources would print spoof articles and a bunch of people would fall for it
it's a longstanding tradition here, like Auld Lang Syne, heteronormativity and wife-beating
It is by far my least favorite holiday. Doubly so because saying you don't like it gets you labeled as a killjoy.
This is why I nerd my own forum.
