I'm not really a Brand Nubian fan so I don't care that much, but it just strikes me as a stupid viewpoint to hold.
I'm honestly not convinced he even believes what he's saying, how else are you going to get people interested in a Lord Jamar record in 2014, after all.
also I have like three or four songs for this album that I want to get people on but I don't know anybody* and asking people out of the blue is fucking awkward.
*except Stripes Solid, but he doesn't work with people who use FL Studio and he knows I use FL Studio.
I still firmly believe that tunes made in sands is miles ahead anything else I've ever done and I am going to do my best to promote the hell out of this album.
I want to take some of those awful rainbow-gradient signs WBC uses, and print relatively innocuous things on them. "THANK GOD FOR FUNNEL CAKE", "THANK GOD FOR KITTENS", "GOD HATES SHRIMP", things like that.
Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I don't like Shrek.
Like, the humor aged badly for me and stuff but really it's the whole 'FUCK THE FAIRY TALE ESTABLISHMENT MAAAAANNNNN" attitude that it espoused, that I find to be really immature.
And it spawned like five thousand imitators who didn't pull it off nearly as well.
Y'know what bugs me for-marketing lists of influences?
At least, for videogames, I keep on seeing indie studios describe their games by relating them to big-name successes -- for the kinds of games I like, I tend to see frequent mentions of Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, and Cave Story.
A related phenomenon is how "tower defence" and "roguelike" seem to be buzzwords these days. And maybe "metroidvania" as well.
possible tl;dr: buzzwords being all over the freakin' place bug me

Indie Games did not really exist until relatively recently (the oldest I can think of is the ancient by indie gaming standards Seiklus). Cave Story itself was probably the first indie success. Doujin games did, but those are not widely known in the west, especially not older ones. Even many indie game "classics" (Super Meatboy, Limbo, Braid, The Binding of Isaac, World of Goo) came out only a few years ago.
The reason "tower defense" has become a ' ' buzzword ' ' is that elements of the genre are very easy to mix in with other things. Same with roguelikes (although people have recently taken to calling hybridized roguelikes/something else's either "rougelites" or "PDLs").
In the music world, you need some way to get blogs interested in you, and a list of notable influences is an easy way to do that.
I'm not going to cite Samuel Truth as an influence--even though he sort of is!--because even though he's on a label, we're essentially peers, and it doesn't make sense for me to be influenced by someone who is on roughly the same level of notoriety as I am, at least not from a business perspective (which is how the people who decide who to write about see these things, sadly).
Relatedly, I should add Raymond Scott and Sun Araw to my influences.

YOU CAUSE A multiple-car accident resulting in several injuries that racks up $1 million in hospital bills. The problem? Your auto insurance policy will cover a maximum of $300,000 per incident. You are found legally obligated to cover the remaining $700,000. Don’t have an extra $700K lying around? That’s where umbrella insurance can help. Umbrella insurance may cover the cost of personal liabilities beyond your current auto, home and/or condo insurance policies.
First: Cool story, Hansel. Second: Who the bloody hell would cause that much damage unless they were very drunk, or playing GTA?
if someone wrote an English-language story where the villains all have traditional judeochristian names (such as Jacob, Chris, Saul, Rebecca, etc.) while the protagonists all have non-judeochristian names (such as Amanda, William, Ryan, Alyssa, etc.), and that person didn't point it out, how long do you think it would take Americans to notice?

but he is saying something a lot of people think, sadly
imagine if the black cards, instead of being sentences with blanks, or questions, are just adjectives
the white cards are still nouns/gerunds/noun phrases, though a different set (i.e. no offensive/dirty content)
the "judge" chooses a noun card to go with the adjective, based entirely on their own choice of criteria, just as in CAH.
but because it's just an adjective -- and often one with multiple meanings -- there's quite a bit more imagination possible
