it's possible to take the flying shoe inside the Temple of Lostness (without using a checkpoint); however, doing so renders the level unwinnable since you can't swim while wearing the shoe

i don't think the Temple of Lostness thing is a problem; the only reason i had the shoe there was because i was looking for secrets, and there's no way to get the shoe until much later in the game. You can still complete the level by losing the shoe.

I am trying to learn C++; I wonder if this is a sisyphean task or not? I want to make pretty games!
C++ is powerful, but it's also not exactly pretty, either; probably the most odd thing about it is the template system, which is how you can make a Perfectly Generic Object that works with most any data type. Also, a few things about it are different from plain C, for what seems to be completely arbitrary reasons, though they do make sense in context; if you've never used plain C, this will be less odd.
