it's kind of weird that it says critically acclaimed but it's actually just p4k

    yeah, that was just weird

i'm not sure i'd call A$AP Rocky or Fuck Buttons obscure either, but my yardstick for 'is this obscure' is 'have i heard of them IRL?' so i may be way off the mark
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”

though to be fair the bones of im not going to type this whole album title again and im sick of acronyms was heavy on filler

but i really like Science/Visions and Gun

which puts them 2 ahead of OPN in terms of "songs that are enjoyable"

chvrches is boring topmancore from a lload of people who got spat out by the sad scottish shoegaze movement because they were too boring even for them and they should go away

oneohtrix ppoint never spent eight hours livetweeting billy corgan improv synth jamming on a synth he didnt know how to use while a guy read herman hesse in the background, and it was more interesting and entertaining than anything chvrches have done ever
I like both of those artists quite a bit so I basically lose either way...

I mean, I can come up with plenty of valid criticisms of both bands/musicians in question, but why is it that whenever someone doesn't like something that I like it's never casual indifference so much as buckets of vitriol? It's kind of disheartening.

Not that casual indifference isn't occasionally just as frustrating, but I dunno.
  • because buckets of vitriol is funnier

like i dont really think OPN is the worst thing in the universe, i just think it's kinda boring

but i cant get much comedic material out of "I think OPN is kinda boring"

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    ^^ OK.

...I think I'm more upset by this because I respect your opinions and thus feel like I'm stupid and wrong for liking something that you guys don't. Which is not the case, I know, and generally I'm not this touchy, but I dunno...

likewise i cant get much mileage out of 'i can't shake the sense that chvrches crafted their sound with things like "target demographics" in their mind as opposed to artistry'

... well, not that you can't do both, but too much thought went into the former for me to be comfortable with it. i think. and i just find them rather bland and uninspiring
  • nah man it's just that its music and there's lots of it and there are lots of different things to dislike/like about any given piece of music so everyone will disagree with everyone on some things because everyone has a wide range of preferences
  • I liked the one Oneohtrix Point Never album I heard (the one with the skull on the cover, the name of which currently escapes me), but I have also heard that most of his work is pretty different from that.

A$AP Rocky is sort of a hipster's idea of mainstream rap. He is rather popular (he's done a song with Drake) but he's not as popular as say, Rick Ross.
  • ...And even when your hope is gone
move along, move along, just to make it through
    (2015 self)
    Hmm.

I heard that nanotechnology could be used to reduce atmospheric Carbon Dioxide to pre-industrial levels.

    Is this true?

perhaps, but as trends/targets go "female fronted retro synthpop with buttery analogue synths" is one i cant help but be in favor of
  • as far as A$AP Mob goes I think Ferg is probably their best member by far (see "Shabba" and his verse on "We Don't Fuckin Care" by Onyx).
  • re:OPN i do quite like his music but i often find the things that he puts alongside it it far more interesting (visuals, videos, livetweeting billy corgan)

if anything i think the music of OPN is rather secondary to my enjoymment of him as an artistic entity
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
equally awesome people can like different things, and that's ok

this has been your trite message for the day courtesy of the hh resident hypothetical particle
  • Sean Price verse on that song is also funny because of how bland it is.
  • also did someone say the words retro, analogue, and synths??

  • ugghhhh every time i re listen to moderne im blown away all over again by how impeccable everything is

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Regarding Chvrches: I get where you could draw that conclusion, although having seen interviews with them, they seem pretty earnest. Plus, there are these little touches in their production and lyrics that are a little too odd to strike me as calculated in the conventional sense. More "conform to deform" than "radio friendly unit shifter," as it were.
  • you could probably argue that. who knows where their intentions lie. probably somewhere in the middle, as with everyone.

i think my taste in female fronted synthpop leans more towards the molly nilsson/deux variety anyway

I stick by what I said about CHVRCHES an hour ago.

I hold out hope that they'll go the MGMT route and indulge their offbeat tendencies, and not care if their new direction alienates the hipsters.
  • the real question is, where is microsoft excel on the big hipster band graph?
  • let's also discuss black marble, a cool band that uses synths

I am not very fond of the vocalist, but the instrumentation is fun. Bass and analogue synthesisers is always a winning combination.
