sometimes i wanna make a 3D platform adventure that takes a bunch of elements from other 3D games, mostly ones that i played when i was a kid, and mashes them together in a way that's really incongruous and silly
like a 3D IWBTG, only probably less hardcore
i will never make this, but i imagine it sometimes
I'm not a huge gamer, but I do need to play Fez and Bastion at some point.
Are there any other relatively recent games like those out there?
in terms of like, "generally considered essential"-ness?
Yeah, that's what I was trying to get at.
I probably should've been clearer about it to begin with.
off the top of my head: Cave Story (which is actually kinda old by now), Limbo, Braid (which I don't much care for, but a lot of people like it), Super Meatboy, The Binding of Isaac, and Spelunky HD.
also a game combining Myst-style puzzles and VN storytelling sounds really excellent, if it was done well
it's certainly a good concept
my brother's doing something of the sort for a 3rd year game design project, but i imagine it won't be a particularly big game because of the time constraints

that's what I wanted to do, pretty much, except 2D

Thanks for the tip off. I'll have to keep some of those in mind, especially Cave Story.
I also have to say that I also think JHM's idea has the potential to be something really awesome.

There's also Terraria and Hotline Miami. And I'd add Don't Starve as an honorary mention.
Personally, I would love to fuse a really good, character-driven interactive story with a more exploration/puzzle-based adventure game format, like a cross between the Myst games and a genuinely good visual novel, but at the moment I lack the connections and skills to do this, so it is a pipe dream.
I'm worked up and incoherent and angry fucking DAMMIT I hate when I get like this.
The only thing I can eke out at the moment is that I hate feeling like my important experiences are being casually invalidated.
Dude, you need to chill.
No one is saying you are not allowed to find X, Y, and Z important, but not everyone else is going to find X, Y, and Z important.
I get that it's irritating when people don't think things you find meaningful actually are, but this is just the same difference you have to deal with when talking to people who aren't the same religion as you (obviously video games are less important than that, but you get my drift).
Lower your dongers, is what I'm getting at basically.

Adding to this list, the video game Journey is pretty fun, though it's apparently only on PS3, so that might be a problem for you.

999 has exploratory elements? I thought it was an adventure game.

I'd exclude Don't Starve from that list, it seems to be a lot more divisive than Terraria or Hotline Miami.
Hell, actually, Minecraft should go on that list too.

999.
I will look into it, as it does look interesting, although it is slightly different from what I have in mind.

And I dunno if it completely fits, but there's a semi-obscure online series called Submachine that has a very fascinating story/world-building around it.
I can't just "chill" I NEVER can and that's why this always happens. I swear I'm physically incapable.
i know the feeling, believe me
as annoying as this probably sounds, i think you need to try harder
i say this because i spent my entire childhood and most of my teenage years getting mad about insignificant things and then thinking i was unable to switch off those feelings afterwards
it never did me any good, and with hindsight, i just needed to be more disciplined
i would advise thinking things through more before you fly off the handle; is an opinion about video games really worth getting angry about?

The problem is, you are treating someone else's experiences as invalidating yours rather than simply accepting that they are different from yours, which to be honest kind of comes off like you consider other people's experiences inferior (or superior?) to your own rather than just, well, not the same. What you have to keep in mind is that these things are subjective. You are not wrong simply because someone has not had your experiences, but nor are they; likewise you are not automatically right when someone else is wrong, and so forth.
I want to say that controls are really important, because I stopped playing Syberia (which has a coupe of interesting elements in its story) because the controls were just so, so terrible (and also the voice acting, but I digress)
But I also stopped playing Prototype because the story was so cliched and hackneyed that I wasn't willing to work through a hard section. And most of the videogames that I'd put on my top ten list are there because of story.
Then again, the games on that top ten list are also backed up by good gameplay, so
but is it really so important that Naney shares your opinion (in spite of completely different prior experiences and, of course, being a completely different person anyway)?
I know you're trying to help and I thank you for that but I don't like feeling like things that are important to me don't matter.
They matter to you. That is the most important thing. They do not have to be important to everyone to be important to you. Likewise, did Naney ever single out anything that you liked as bad? More importantly, did he ever say that you were dumb or a bad person for liking that thing? No, he did not.
Enjoy what you enjoy and feel free to share that enjoyment, but do not begrudge others for their feelings.
Is the Walking Dead or Anodyne divisive? I feel like they might be.
I think Anodyne is pretty well regarded.
I don't know how people feel about the Walking Dead, but I've seen it played and it seems to suffer from Playable Movie Syndrome, much like something like The Last of Us.

i've enjoyed Drink the Moon, but i'm not that into RPGs and i always seem to drop out of them

and take their weapons leaving them dead
but i got into games relatively late for a nineties kid; the games i'm most nostalgic about are largely 3D games for the N64 and Gamecube.

that's as in recent 'essential' games

@sredni It's probably not even about opinions anymore at this point it's about how damn angry I make myself at everything

Of course, I say this knowing your living situation and knowing that that may not be possible =/

Not that any of these games you're listing are bad, but I'm just trying to answer the question.

another thing I fear
there are a heck of a lot of widely-praised games
