I'm watching ID shows for the first time in a while, and I keep thinking to myself "these are all reactionary fantasies, like a lot of slasher movies were...it's like they're trying to scare people into thinking their spouses will leave them and all hell will break loose."

For a company based in suburban Maryland, Discovery can be pretty damn Midwestern at times. :P
    how is that Midwestern
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Well, I guess the word I want is "conservative"; back in the mid-20th century, they used to go on about "but how will this play in Peoria?" as a mark of how conservative something needed to be to have mass appeal, hence the "Midwestern" quip. I would say Salt Lake City, Phoenix or Dallas would be a better benchmark now.

And it also doesn't reflect that, outside the Mountain West, it's more of a urban vs. rural thing now. While there are places in Virginia that are conservative hotbeds (Lynchburg, anyone?), they're also either very rural or home to a large conservative organization (in Lynchburg's case, Liberty University).

i don't know about you, but "mass appeal" feels so repressive to me

Okay it's so weird seeing posts from like a yearish ago when basically everyone was trying to imitate Naney.

This post may slip past the ire of Miko, provided that Miko is not being referred to here. ^_^

I never got the impression that anyone was imitating Naney.

Considering that the voting public on the whole is far less conservative than the current government, I would say that the average Representative's idea of "mass appeal" is pretty narrow and skewed...

Well I certainly was to an extent.

I know I saw more people than just me doing it.
  • Urggggh. So apparently my mother's going away to Florida soon and I have to stay at the house of some guy I'm really really not comfortable around and getting rides from his son who I don't particularly care for because allegedly it takes "an act of God to wake me up" even though literally every time I've been left to my own devices in the morning I did immensely better than when my mother wakes me up by screaming.

i don't think i consciously imitated anybody, but i definitely pick up characteristics from people whose posts i read often

i did used to use correct grammar, though

not sure why i stopped, probably tumblr
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.

    This.

It was especially funny three years ago or so, when AU and I first started picking up each other's little quirks...because we already had pretty similar posting styles, so as they got more similar people legitimately had a hard time telling us apart! :B
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i know for a fact that i got 'because [noun or adjective]' from melloncollie, whom i haven't spoken to in years
  • There was a distressingly long time where I thought Idler and Naney (then Inane) were the same person, because I am an idiot.

There was a time when I thought Miko and Vorpy were the same person. Oh wait...

    I still miss Idler sometimes
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i legitimately didn't guess that Death and Bitch Pudding were the same person until she said so

i quite liked Idler, but i can't even remember him very well now >_<
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
    melloncollie...whatever happened to her?
  • Particularly distressing is that I sent Idler several messages under the pretense of him being Naney

    and uh

I'm still pretty embarrassed about this
  • What about Bob?
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Bob tends to vanish for long periods of time, then appear and make a lot of posts, then vanish again

assuming we're thinking about the same person

How is Juan?  Haven't seen him in a while, either.
