A shamisen is a three-stringed musical instrument similar to a guitar, originating in Japan. A shamisen is usually made of cat or dog hide, so calling a cat "shamisen" is analogous to a Westerner calling a cat "tennis racket."

Dilemma time: I want a Nintendo Entertainment System.
I also happen to know that my grandmother has a Nintendo Entertainment System in her basement, complete with cables and controllers.
Furthermore, I know that my grandmother does not care about video games in the slightest and has not touched that NES since my mother and uncle moved out of her house in the early '90s.
But, like...I would feel weird just, like, ASKING for it. :\

Just ask. And please, spend some more time with your grandmother.
There are certain strains of atheism that resemble a personality cult, but I would hesitate to call it a religion simply because a religion requires theological elements of some sort.
I wonder: if half of this country is so religious, why do I know more than 92% of the country about religion, when I am an atheist?
Atheism counts as a religion in my eyes (for the whole: I must respect all religions, and show Christlike love to everyone thing).
Please try not to belittle those who have beliefs that ate different from yours.
Why do you consider atheism a religion?
It's a religious affiliation. A stance on the matter of the spiritual, wondrous, and divine. It deserves the respect and love that all religions deserve.
In some ways, it isn't a religion (it has a lack of belief, rather than belief).
But for my Respect All Religions, I include Atheism as a religion.
The alternative would allow me to say mean things about atheists while still feeling like I respect religious freedom. Gotta be tolerant and kind.

I do spend a lot of time with my grandmother...for a while, I was driving her to work daily; I only stopped because my parents needed the car.

Had a nice conversation about music with a girl who's the daughter of the friends of the couple who lives in my dorm (they took me to the play).
It's nice to be an expert for once. Too much time around music scholars (both at school and here in the heap) and you forget that, to some people, you're the font of knowledge.
I would like to read There is no Haruhi in my Classroom, since it seems conceptually interesting, but no translation appears to exist (indeed, a couple articles aside, good luck finding anything on it at all).
...I suppose that Atheism being number #2 (which means that they count it as a religion, so, points for Aliroz) makes sense because a lot of the questions they asked were non-Christian, and atheists are more likely to take comparative religion classes?
Still no explanation for the Jewish being on top though. Besides the fact that the Jewish tend to be highly educated in general.
i mean like if you're gonna be religious you should know shit about it
because like religion is like math
it seems hella lame if you just skim by with as little as possible, you have to work at it a bit before you get to the cool stuff, which is like super rad and shit
so i guess lots of people just go along in life being like super lame religious

that's pretty lame
what is the cool stuff about religion
also: why do you sometimes post stuff about God punishing sinners
Lots of people seem to have an aversion toward seriously thinking about the big questions - where the universe came from and what ultimately happens to it and all of us...I just don't get that either. What's more important than that stuff? I know, you'd rather just sit and watch a football game. It's less intimidating.

Things that actually affect my daily wants and needs.
Thinking about "the big things" requires a very specific type of mind, and not necessarily the kind that many people have. Which is, as far as I'm concerned, perfectly fine.
I guess if everybody were a "big thoughts" thinker, we'd be a race of philosophers and would accomplish nothing and would've died out a long time ago, maybe

Now I know what Dr. Mario feels like when he's throwing fist-sized pills around in the hopes that people will recognize him as a psychiatrist.
