Well that's one philosophical controversy that's gonna be re-ignited.
I really don't like how "privilege" is understood and used.
I know the nuances of it escape me, and I know that I'm rather ignorant of tumblr and Social Justice; but it appears to me that things like "check your privilege" are a way to discount the viewpoints and opinions of people, because their origins have conditioned them to think in certain ways.
It's not your real opinion, you've just been conditioned to think that way, and if you saw the truth, you would agree with me.
Can someone explain how I am wring here if I am wrong?
The whole "check your privilege" thing is dumb, but the basic concept of privilege is not invalid simply because some people abuse it. That's sort of like saying democracy is bad because Bush used it as an excuse to occupy Iraq after the WMD thing fell through.
Being conscientious of the fact that your financial situation, class, ethnicity and religious background might put you at a greater advantage than someone else and thus shape your outlook on life differently is important. It does not invalidate your views, but it does mean that there are some things that you do not have first-hand experience with and thus should be careful in talking about.

Heidegger was a Nazi, yes, we get it. And Schopenhauer was a misogynist and Nietzsche was batty with syphilis. This does not invalidate everything that they said automatically.

Swamp Thing is a colony of algae that absorbed the memories of a dead scientist and had their growth accelerated by a super secret formula. Swamp Thing has full human intelligence, command over plants, and works as a protector of earth's vegetable life.
Man-Thing is a scientist who was transformed by a formula into a swamp monster. He has little intelligence, mostly gets by on telepathic empathy, and anything that feels fear will be burned by it's touch. He guards an inter-dimensional portal in the Florida Everglades.
Both had runs by talented writers(Alan Moore for Swamp Thing, and Steve Gerber for Man-Thing) that had a strong mystical and horror vibe, and became hugely influential to future comic writers.

Also, Nietzsche's prose, while often beautiful even in translations, is pretty frigging opaque. He was clearly not a stupid man, by my god did he ever love to avoid making definitive points.

Or private law, letting you get away with things other people wouldn't get away with.

It's been used that way for a long time. A privilege is something that is afforded by society that is not a given. One has rights and one has privilege. Usually this is associated with class, whether economic or social.
