On the other hand, if i'm going to go around taking pride in stuff like that, what do i say when someone points out all the bad shit my country did? i can't excuse it or wave it aside, so i have to take responsibility for it.

I've lived in Ohio my entire life. I've seen a fair bit of it, but certainly not all of it.
Of course, most of Ohio is pretty rural, and I have been to all three of Ohio's largest urban centers (Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati)
Notably, I haven't been to Akron, Canton, or Toledo, and I've only been to suburbs of Dayton. I have been to Springfield, though!
In that case, i don't see that i have the right to do more than acknowledge my country's achievements.
Well, think of it this way: You would have gladly participated in those achievements and strongly opposed those injustices. So you can be proud of the former and condemn the latter with out feeling like the weight of the world is on your shoulders.
Like, i didn't personally abolish slavery in the Empire or fight Nazis, so why should i take pride in it?

No?
Being proud of your country's accomplishments does not imply bandying that pride about.
Personally I feel that if one really loves their homeland they would fully acknowledge that it's not perfect and would actively want to see it become a better place for everyone, instead of just upholding the status quo and going "we're #1, all other peoples go home"

well yes, but that's what I mean when I say I like the principles America exists on, not necessarily how they've been (not) executed.

i don't see any need to keep quiet about it, besides understanding that there's a time and a place.
I mean, there's the Fourth of July, which presumably has some british counterpart.
Otherwise I don't really feel the need to bring it up. And I'll again reiterate that when I say I'm a patriot I don't mean I'm one of those people who argues that The US singlehandedly won World War II.

Which makes you Frederick Douglass' definition of a patriot.
i mean, i have a rather mechanical, black-and-white way of thinking which i see ridiculed in redditors and tropers a lot.
But you're not an insensitive jerk with no self-awareness. You are a bit literal, but you are generally very thoughtful and extremely nice, and you really don't strike me as believing that the world is entirely black and white at all.

whose Frederick Douglass?
One of the greatest orators in American history. Ran as a free black man on a vice-presidential ticket with a female presidential candidate at a time when slavery was still in effect and women could not vote.

Hm... i don't think there is an equivalent, actually. St George's Day isn't a major celebration. i guess Guy Fawkes' Night was maybe an equivalent once? These days it's not associated with patriotism, and is increasingly getting overshadowed by Hallowe'en in many places. If you're Scottish there's Burns Night.
i'm not suggesting that anyone needs to go around waving a flag everywhere or bragging about their country's achievements, anyway.

Thank you very much. It's very reassuring that you think so.

Just not when the idiots down the street are setting them off at 2 AM and scaring your dog

You know what recent Chrome feature I find bizarre?
The inclusion of the entire Chrome OS interface as "Windows 8 Mode":

i have been to Scotland, though, and been to many parts of England, if in some cases only briefly.
i guess
my American history is kind of spotty, but what i know of the New Deal seems admirable.
that's hard to do
i think like a robot, don't i?
Alternatively, you may just have visited a lot of foreign language websites, and Google knows.

(I kid; I'm actually really fond of the Fourth of July. Though I never understood why nobody calls it by its proper name.)
I care even less about a product or service when I can't understand what they want to sell... Nevermind that also applies to ads in english.
Stupid ad companies.

Good night Imi.
Sometimes it thinks i'm American because i visit the site via a link someone here posted, and then i get American ads.
