i was gonna say that would have been unlikely given the historical setting and the character's background

but then, the BBC series was explicitly set in a fantasy version of England which was more ethnically diverse and egalitarian than the historical one, and he was still white

meanwhile we still haven't had a non-white Doctor Who and every time the subject comes up there's always someone who complains that this wouldn't be true to the character

because apparently changing his personality is fine, but his race and gender are absolutely set in stone

oh damn, i appear to be in London?

i'm not sure i can afford the train home
  • i'd love a PoC/non-male Doctor

    or perhaps both?????
  • oooooh, London

I hope you do make it home but I loved London when I was there
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
(i am not actually in London)

i've visited London a few times

i find it kind of overwhelming; everything's so big

it feels like you're walled in

I think I just found one for it. Blue with buttons on, not a cylinder, never a cylinder, but blue and woolly and important-looking.
  • It's kind of weird-- I don't think of myself as a huge people person but I really want to live in a city, preferably one more dense than where I currently live.

I think it's because suburban life bores me these days. I've lived in the same house for the better part of 13 years and Raleigh barely changes anymore. In fact, it strikes me as one of those towns that only really seems fun for the older crowd, so as it stands I don't have much to gain from that.

I saw this picture on Tumblr and it said "spot the POC" but it kind of seems like an odd thing to say about this set of movies in particular because three of the four are based on true stories.

Raleigh has an ABC O&O, which only seven other cities do

Admittedly, I would read the hell out of a Batman series that's just him fighting white-collar criminals.

If it helps, I feel the same way a lot.

Suburban life is bland and samey, and it seems like that's intentional. :\

I'll admit, I don't really understand why anyone would consider bland and samey desirable...
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
No distractions, no surprises. A continuum of nothingness, perfect for pursuing adventures by proxy (by which I mean books, games, etc.).

i think it's valid to question the particular selection of stories that get adapted, at least

Fair enough, but a sample size of four isn't particularly good for that.

Not to mention that lack of representation is a problem of trends, not individuals.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
'spot the POC' isn't exactly pointing fingers at any one individual

trends won't go away if individuals are all like 'ok but my white guy movie is fine'

    Huh

That's actually part of why I find Belle so relatable, tbh
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
see i love the song... also, to be fair, in context it's quite clear why Belle isn't happy where she is

but familiarity = comfort, to me

    Ariel is the same way

There you are, just floating around under the sea with your fishy friends and your seashells and you want to go up to the surface? Where human beings have been killing and torturing each other for a million years? No thanks
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    well, i kinda get Ariel

she's curious, and she's an enthusiast of a kind

Belle likes stories, i can relate to that at least

I dunno, I wouldn't go so far as to say I crave adventure

Because, unlike four years ago, I can understand the difference between fantasy and reality now

But life in the suburbs is sheltered and just very...boring

I'd like to live somewhere where things happen; somewhere where I can go and explore for a while

    On a more spergtastic note

I've often wondered why railroad crossing signals don't have amber lights

It could just flash to let you know the signal is working; that way if the signal is completely dark you'd know it's malfunctioning and not to be trusted
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
really i guess why i don't like the idea of adventure is it makes me think of unpleasant surprises and never knowing what you're going to do tomorrow

nasty shocks, not being able to stick to plans, all that crap

i like seeing new places and learning new things, but i need somewhere safe to retreat to

my least favourite part in stories is usually when the hero's home gets destroyed or is otherwise no longer home, because it's disturbing to me

also i guess i never got what's wrong with suburbs

there's places to walk, there's people to talk to

you still get books and TV and the Internet

    cities seem unfriendly and grey

and city people are like 'but there are parks' and i'm like, i've been to London, i've seen the parks, all worn grass and flat ground, buildings on all sides

they're not even close to being a substitute for the real countryside, and yet the people there love them and appreciate them so much, you can tell... it's almost heartbreaking

Human beings have also been pushing limits of intellectual discussion.

I mean, people in the ocean still have a monarch for crying out loud, how much discussion about the equality of sentient and sapient creatures do you expect to find amongst a people where one person is still beheld as to hold up a society.

Going on an adventure doesn't mean that you're risking death or that your home will be destroyed. Also, while I can understand wanting to be somewhere comfortable and familiar, unless that place is the kind of place where you can be who you want to be and live the way that you want to live... is it really that comfortable or safe at all?

Hmpf. We were using that area, as a student body. Could you have not done that?

There are different kinds of cities and different places within those cities.

There is also a distinct difference between the countryside and the suburbs.

Too often than naught though, the term that can be described as adventure brings about disastrous change that could possibly rob you of your livelihood.

@ Sredni: i guess not.  That's why i can understand Ariel, and i guess the same goes for Belle.

But... i know adventure doesn't mean risking death all the time, but i hate just not knowing what i'm going to do tomorrow.  And home, as in, my hometown, and my parents' house, really has changed since i've been away; i know it's not the same as having your home destroyed, but i can understand feeling uprooted.

I'll be honest, my main issue with suburbs, at least American ones, is how automobile-centric they are

There seems to be an underlying assumption that if you have a car you're ok with using it as your only method of transportation, god forbid anyone want to have stores or restaurants or other anything within a reasonable walking distance

Granted, this is largely dependent on the age of the suburb; a lot of older suburbs tend to be better about this
