Largely: religious tension, the fact that about half of all Belgians were Walloons who spoke French instead of Dutch, and the fact that a lot of the old republican traditionals in the area considered Willem I a despot instead of a proper monarch.
Today, this manifests as a sometimes-joking sometimes-serious rivalry between the two countries. Not unlike the one between the US and Canada.
