I am currently listening to Mogwai's Rave Tapes. The opener reminds me of Tortoise, which is sort of ironic given how different their styles normally are.
"Remurdered" is amazing. I would perhaps liken it to Macha's more propulsive, guitar-driven work in tone, but I prefer to just take it for what it is: A really good instrumental rock song that also happens to be a really good minimalist synth workout.

One thing that really does bug me about this album is that the way the rock instrumentation is mixed and recorded seems weirdly flat in comparison to their earlier work. For a band that relies so heavily on manipulating dynamics and textures for effect, this is a bit irksome. The songs are fine, but the mix makes them harder to get into.

"Like" is such a weird concept
Because it seems like it ought to be a binary thing of "like" or "dislike" but there's also "neither like nor dislike"
Looking at the Tiny Mix Tapes review, I can see where they're coming from about the album being comparatively predictable as far as tone goes, and they seem to be echoing my thoughts on the weak mixing in less direct terms, but I feel like it's excessively harsh in a lot of ways. For example, while complaining that Mogwai's music has never undergone any major shifts, it fails to acknowledge that, in some ways, the band's career is a lot like one of their compositions: A gradual transformation from one thing to another over a long period of time, recognised better in hindsight than in the process. This is a transitional album, the sound of the band feeling out something a bit different with a lot of nods to the sound that they had previously been plying.
It also contains a really excellent vocal track in "Blues Hour", which is rare for them.
