65536 is the sixteenth power of two.  That makes it 256 squared.

I am really lame for spending the last two hours calculating that in my head.

Man, I know up to 256 by heart; and it's rather easy to get from 256 to 4096, but each one after that get more difficult to do in my head.

I always remember 32 as being the fifth power of two, and it's a good way to calculate whether, say, 1024 is the tenth, eleventh, or twelfth power of two.

If I lose count, 32 is the thumb on the left hand, 64 is the thumb on the right hand, and from there it's pretty easy to get to 4096.

The main problem with these powers of two is that while I'm fine with 1024, 2048, 4096, because the 1, 2, and 4, are separated from the 24, 49, 96, it starts to get really icky when you try to go "8 followed by 192,

16 followed by 384 (or wait, should it be 386),

32 followed by 768 (or should it be 772 or 736 or 786 or 738),

654 followed by 1536 (or should it be 1544 or 1454 or 1472 or 1478 or 1572 or 1476) no, wait, so it should be 65 followed by dang it I forgot the numbers.

I am, however, the absolute BOMB when it comes to deriving the powers of two as written in binary.

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
^^^ It's even less than that, if you consider that there are probably who knows how many billions of Earth-like planets out there in the universe with how many billion separate timelines, and so many other things going on not connected to life at all. It's more like buying one of those crazy-huge backup drives with at least 4 TB of space with that one little ReadMe file in it, in folders within folders full of secret histories of lifeless planets and vast cosmic calamities.

Better than focus groups, test audiences, and demographic-focusing.

I'll take Zebra batman, Starro the Conqeror, Ant-man vs The porkupine and his fiendish bath-tub trap, and rainbow batman, any day over say, Winter Soldier or any Crisis other than the first, and definitely over Civil war.

  • There's no way Civil War had a test audience.

BTW I have been reading Animal Man and Swamp Thing in training for the return of the New 52 Liveblog.

I thought once I finished Dial H, I could work my way up to the Rotworld crossover between those two and comment on it as someone who's read the original comics those are trying to be.

Maybe the test audience for Civil war was babies who just liked the pictures and colors and couldn't read yet, and they liked to chew on the soft paper?

Like, oh, baby 112 chewed on Hank Pym, let's make him a Skrull, and baby 53 spat up on Spider man, so let's have him change sides, and baby 20 just tore apart a picture of Sue Storm, so let's have her switch sides...

We should really have a compendium chronicling what happens in all of these wacky covers.

    Not just on the covers.

This is a big gripe for me, too-- and one of the primary reasons I'm annoyed that I didn't get the chance to get a 2013 HTC One.

I don't care what anyone else says, I think this is the most gorgeous phone on the market. (The spinoffs with the plastic trim are... not pretty, though.)

My brother has that version of the HTC One

It is indeed one of the prettiest phones ever
  • The Moto X is also a looker, and a notable one for allowing you to change it as you see fit. If I had one it'd look roughly like this but with gray or black highlights instead of blue.

    image

In fact, I probably would've jumped the gun and went for one if the specs were slightly higher on it. If Google ever gets around to introducing a higher-end MotoMaker product within the next 2 years, though, you'd better believe I'd go for that or an HTC product.

Legit question: Is it frustrating not having a menu button?

That's my main gripe with Android 4.x; it seems like Google is trying to push this idea that actual buttons are obsolete and everything should be onscreen (see: the little navbar used on the Nexus devices)
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
It was kind of frustrating at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly. What I really miss is the trackball from my Incredible, but then, Bluetooth mice work there.
  • Realization: I don't think I like A Beautiful Mind as much as I thought I did.

I dunno, I think I kind of like the de-emphasis of the menu button. I mean, I still use my menu button like it's nobody's business on my current phone because Samsung made it such, but I never had any issues with it back on my One X+ or on my tablet now (well, not /right/ now, given the state I put it in, but relatively speaking).

Generally I hew closer to HTC and Google's design philosophies as far as Android is concerned, although I try to deviate in some respects (my One had Segoe as its system font).

I don't dislike it, and the good stuff in it is still pretty good, but...

Why is everything else so... meh? The directing is passable but not great, the acting is decent but none of the actors have any chemistry, the characterization is spotty made all the more obvious and frustrating because easily the two best characters in the movie are hallucinations. And even if "the twist" is pretty much the biggest part of the movie (and quite effective, too, the hallucinated characters are so interesting as to leave me feeling legitimately betrayed when they turn out to be imaginary) it also serves to make the two halves of it feel like different movies. It's supposed to be a sudden change, I get it, but they should have smoothed the transition a bit. Or at least have made the conflict in the second half feel more interesting than repeated instances of Nash screwing up.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Hmm. You make a good point.
  • Also while I can get wanting to branch out and not get typecast, Russel Crowe was such a weird choice. His Nash character spends the entire time being mumbly and weird, so when the second half of the movie makes him have a sad fall from grace it isn't nearly as effective as it should be because he was never really all that dignified to begin with.

Also when I said none of the characters have chemistry, that was a bit inaccurate. Nash and his hallucinations have great chemistry, but he and his wife have such bad chemistry that it almost sucks the life out of the movie.
