You know, you guys are just furthering my temptation to buy an expensive fight stick. I don't even like XBox 360 controllers. At all. Any controller with an analog stick where the D-pad should be is a controller I don't really like.

fine with me, not my money.
my point still stands though. it makes much more sense to try some less expensive options and find one you like that you can easily replace than to throw 200 down on something that may not want.
of course, if you have tried out said fight stick and you like it, and you have the money for it, then there is no reason not to get it.

hmm, well... I would actually really like a decent affordable controller with a D-pad that I can use, but I can't seem to find one. If I get the arcade stick I want then I probably won't need another controller, but I don't know if it's worth it.

bleh, I can't have controllers breaking. That is a pain. Perhaps I will get the expensive one that is built to last. I dunno. I will consider it more when I get off these painkillers and have a clearer head.
Anyway, Deathsmiles for XBox 360 is lots of fun. :3

Yesterday I learned how easy it is to beat every Touhou game on Easy with no deaths. It kind of makes me feel cool and skilled, but then I remember that I am playing on a mode called "easy." :p
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Highly Responsive To Prayers is indeed a weird Arkanoid clone.
A very weird Arkanoid clone. I'd probably actually play the Touhou series a lot more often if they were still like that since I'm much better at Arkanoid than shmups.
By law, every indie RPG must change at least one of those variables. Magic to Creativity, perhaps?
Obviously change Magic to Tempo
every character has a fixed cycle of tempo that changes each turn and attacks don't actually use up tempo, but instead change based off of what the character's tempo currently is
Some characters might build up some tempo each turn and build into an overpowering juggernaut of death, some characters go through a up and down cycle, and there can be spells that capitalize on large tempo or small tempo
The standard trope of "surrealist RPG uses the same HP/Mana system as every other JRPG but just changes the name" actually bothers the shit out of me.
Either make the combat interesting but traditional, genuinely innovative, or just don't include it. Don't half-ass it, if I'm just going to want to spam the "Auto" button, that's a flaw.

idk just a thought or something
That would be interesting, and I'd definitely like to try my hand at that, but the major theme in this game is education, not music. Also, that would require custom coding. Not only do I not know how to do that, but the Lite version of RPG Maker might not even allow me to do that.
Right now, in terms of battle mechanics, I'm going to try and put a bigger emphasis on elemental damage and weaknesses. One of the big problems with OFF! (and, tangentially, Ghost Suburb II) is that the elemental attributes are largely nominal (as are most status effcts), and you can just spam the skill (or 'competence') that gives the highest damage.
I want people to need to use the status effects in order to win battles.
So, interesting but traditional, to say the least. After all, innovation isn't exactly open to me with Lite's limits.

Yarrun, I think of Off as a piece of art, and I think it isn't meant to be really challenging to finish. The battling is simplistic because, I imagine, it is more a quirky way of presentation than an actual challenge to the player. I think Off is sort of a novel presented in the format of a retro RPG.

Fair enough. I simply wish for my game to be effective in a different manner.
Frankly, the farther away my game is from Off, the better. The worst thing that can happen to genre fiction is for it to be dismissed as copycat work.

The unreality of it should be enough to strike at the heart of existence.
a wrench to stick up the celestial gears of time.
You can draw gears and a wrench, right?
I have an XBox controller but it went bad on me. Now I use the best controller ever, the Sega Genesis one. Cost me $10

I realize this is a video game but I still kinda feel bad about expansion through conquest.
