Pendergast, at least in the novel that I read, functions as little more than a cool-looking plot device. He solves most of the problems for the protagonist, gives exposition about the villain, and generally does all the cool stuff that the dowdy archaeologist protagonist can't do on her own. He's all exposition and flashy abilities and no emotion. At no point in the novel did I feel that he was someone to empathize with, someone human. That, above all else, is why I consider him a Mary Sue.
in the book i am not writing that i came up with just now
Are you going to make them Cat cats? Cats that act in a way foreign to human understanding? Or cat humans, cats that act as humans do in a way to make their problems and ways of thinking able to relate to an audience ?
that's a real fear, that everyone hates you but just pretends to put up with you for some reason
if i could capture that feeling i'd be a real horror writer.
i tried to be one a few years ago but i got bored with it and went back to dinking around in some daw or another which is what i always do because change is scary.
@ Kex: it's a clear motive but it's not one you can empathize with
It's clear in hindsight but it's not revealed soon enough. You can't be on the same level as the characters are emotionally if you don't know why they're doing what they're doing.
He's dedicated to the idea that everything is devoid of meaning and things happen basically randomly. I was under the impression that was at least related to nihilism.

iunno, haven't really thought it through
and given that i have never thought about it at all and don't intend to, i never will

it is, but he's primarily dedicated to causing mayhem and watching the consequences
i can relate somewhat though; i tend to feel like everyone thinks i'm ridiculous and annoying a lot of the time, even when i'm given no reason to assume this

really dude you are like the least annoying person ever

no, i meant the Joker's motive
I was operating under the pretense of empathy = understanding why a character does the things they do.

what i don't get is that like all the arguments for movies being good nowadays seem to simply be arguments that they don't suck
like a movie can not suck but still not be great
I think it's more a matter of that people will start off by saying "It sucks!" and then the only people who try to justify their opinions are the ones who thought it was good.
I do have to wonder what makes let's plays entertaining on a philosophical level.
with such variety amongst them, common trends would have to be an electronic interactive device, and the presence of an opinion from an outside commenter.
what about those two traits has mesmerized the populace in such a way.

They feel intimate. It's a "I'm on the couch, experiencing this game with them!" type of feeling, I would guess.

@ Kex: it's a clear motive but it's not one you can empathize with (also that's not what nihilism means)

whatever though, you know you better than i do.
