Miranda's better than Ashley by four levels of magnitude at best. Jacob's better by, like, one.
(I actually liked Ashley's character in Mass Effect 1. It's a good treatment of what is, essentially, a space conservative. Miranda, on the other hand, is kind of a typical 'Broken Ace' type. I could never really connect with her, emotionally. Her being a loyal pawn of Cerberus for half the game didn't help that)
Also, since we're gauging interest from other heapers, since I read a bunch of manga and a lot of it is small series that aren't that well known, would anyone be interested in me doing a series of short reviews for some of the manga I read in the anime thread?
make your own thread, but yes.
We should have an actual manga thread.
I think that we had one once, but it died or something.
I don't think we had one. I wasn't able to find it under general media.
Jacob had the advantage of being introduced in ME2, rather than 1. Almost everyone in the first game feels less fleshed out than in the sequels.
That she did, and that he did.
I think part of the trouble with Jacob is his loyalty mission. There's too much focus on the father and not enough on what Jacob himself feels.
Jack had a good loyalty mission. Tali had a good loyalty mission. Mordin and Garrus had good loyalty missions. With those, you really get a feel for the character in focus and see exactly how they feel about the situation.
Jacob's mission is interesting design-wise, but it's a poor exploration of his character. Samara and Grunt have that kind of problem as well (largely because Samara's overshadowed by her daughter), but they have a good amount of dialogue on the ship, so it's balanced out.
I like how the Turians don't have a clear analogue to an Earth animal.
The Asari are just women with tentacle hair. The Salarians are walking salamanders. The Krogan are a cross between frogs and lizards. The Elcor (which is my favorite species, btw), the Vorcha are demons, and the Volus are...well, to be politically incorrect, they're Space Jews.
The Turians? I've heard them called reptilian, avian, and a bunch of other things
I like that Lain's blank reactions to most things is so set in stone by the first three episodes that smiling at the end of the third episode is a "what the shit" moment.

This is also part of why I found the end of episode eight both heartbreaking and utterly horrific.
I am only on episode three for Lain and episode 4 for Tatami Galaxy. Simulwatch is slowing me down.
Episode three is the big initial "WHAM!" moment, but episode eight actually outdoes it. You will see.
As for The Tatami Galaxy, well, the whole thing is great fun, but it really does build over time. The last three episodes, in particular, are just... stunning.

Ashley was just dull.

Taking any suggestions if you can think of something witty off the top of your head.

Garrus gets most of the best lines, though.

Speaking of them, I think I found the best possible game for Naney.

Truly, we should all aspire to be like him.
I wanted to pause Get Out Of My Way I Am Trying To Eat You, not erase my progress and start over.
Very slow, but that's intentional, I assume.
I am also amused the Japanese pronunciation of Psyche is close to the original Greek Psukhe
possibly my favorite show. Certainly one of my favorite dramatic shows.
i watched it in Japanese and i thought it was excellent.
I do think the dub makes Lain's weird, staccato speech more apparent, but that may also just be me.
I kind of have written it off because uuuuuuugh JRPG style battles.
