I am amused by the last two posts. At that point it's no longer "what a horrible thread this is", but rather like watching a slapstick comedy.

Finished my first readthrough of the play.

It's a mystery set in an insane asylum, so in addition to having a hella racist portrayal of a Chinese person, it also has some pretty unfortunate depictions of people with mental disabilities. The former might be fixable, if I can talk to the teacher and convince the class that I'm not being a no-fun PC nut, but the latter is sort of set in stone.

In addition to being pretty insensitive, it also doesn't really mesh well with the main plot. Apparently the play we got is actually a sequel (so there are a lot of plot threads integral to the mystery that are somewhat sloppily summarized) and the "lunatics" (as they're described in the play) are something of a holdover from the original.

like, a cockroach could easily outmanoeuvre a black widow, but a black widow isn't a hunting spider, it's a weaver

Hmm, that's an interesting idea.

Take the vague sounds/tones of someone else talking, and try to recreate what they said, but don't filter for sense the attempts at recreation. So basically, just writing down the closest sounds in the same language that come to mind.
