  • honestly even from a pop music standpoint a lot of acclaimed albums came out this year even if I didn't personally enjoy many of them.
  • Yeah, Todd is like exclusively pop music. I can confirm that pop music was awful this year. It was one of the first times when I'd honestly prefer the radio to be off when I was riding in the car.
  • honestly pop music seemed ok to me too?...

not that i can recall the last time i heard some pop music and thought it was terrific, but this year's batch had some cool stuff, and the worst of it seemed fairly innocuous.
  • yeah the only like ear-bleedingly awful thing I can think of that came out this year was, again, "Blurred Lines".

What were the songs on his list? (don't link me to the vid, I'm watching something else right now)
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i didn't think it was a terrible year for pop music

most of it was pretty ok
  • wow im only 2 minutes in and i already want to stab this overly-opinionated man in the fucking ears
  • and the worst of it seemed fairly innocuous.
That was part of his problem, honestly. He said this year was basically a consistent 4/10, which is almost worse than just horrible songs all year.

I'm no music expert, of course, but I agree with his assessment. Even if there was quite a bit of good stuff it wasn't really on the radio that often, and the radio was dominated by just headachingly boring garbage.
  • like seriously if he keeps this up i will rent a car, drive it literally into his house, throw in Whitehouse's For Peter Kurten, turn the volume all the way up and just walk off.
  • I dunno man.

Contrary to often-floated opinion, "competent" is not the worst thing a song can be.

I would rather listen to boring neo boom-bap than fucking Wiz Khalifa any day of the week.
  • i want to chew off his fingers

i want to taste his blood and hear his bones break and his sinews snap
  • i want to stick my thumbs in his eyes and just pressssssssssss
  • That seems like a matter of personal preference. I know I have gotten literal headaches from how boring this year has been, and that's never really happened to me before.
  • i will move in for a kiss and chew off his tongue
  • i want to stick my thumbs in his eyes and just pressssssssssss

And I thought I was the Takes Things Too Seriously guy.

There is seriously nothing about the generic pop songs from 2013 that is not shared by generic pop songs from 2012.

Also, both "Suit & Tie" and "Darkhorse" came out last year, which is some of the better stuff I've heard on the radio in a long time.

Granted the latter is mostly good because Juicy J is on it, but still.

But I've never been this bored by music. Like I said, I'm one of the less musically-inclined here but I don't ever recall there being such a dearth of quality for such a long period of time. I mean, there was a lot of good but it simply wasn't enough to drown out the oppressively lukewarm.

    no dude you don't understand

I got to hear Juicy J's bad puns on the radio for the first time that I have been old enough to appreciate them.
  • also the "T.K.O." remix got Pusha T on pop radio for the first time....ever? So that's significant.
  • you have Get Lucky, which features Pharoah Sanders

by definition this makes it the best pop song on the radio since the last one featuring Pharoah Sanders
  • I'm not denying there was good stuff by any means. Just that for the most part is was generic soul crushingly bland crap that was so generic and soul crushingly bland I have a hard time remembering it. It just sort of melds into this icky EDM-and-ear-splitting-vocals mush.
  • his evaluation of that FOB song is terrible and man i don't even like FOB

But there is stuff like that every year.

The only reason rockists care is that in recent years the generic (and the good) stuff has been largely electronic instead of forgettable post-punk, and rock people feel threatened by everything that has less than nine guitars in it.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
why would you pay any attention to 'soul crushingly bland' music when there's good music also in the charts?
  • real rock stars
i will feed you your own genetalia

I actually kind of like that Fallout Boy song ("Started At The End" I think it's called?)

Something about overdramatic vocals can be interesting at times, and I think it works ok there.

Also did you know there's a Kanye West remix of "This Ain't A Scene"? There is, it's hilarious.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
that feeling when people talk about pop music and you have literally no idea what they're saying anymore
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
also 'rock people' are not the same as rockists

i take great exception to that
  • Tachyon said:

Because I don't choose what comes on the radio...? Believe me, I savored the rare good or at least interesting bits when they came around.
  • real rock stars

Could you take it down a notch?

I have named a number of good to excellent pop songs. The radio containing roughly 70% forgettable-ness is not unusual or new.

Eminem's three most recent singles also come to mind.

no but Todd probably is because like a full half of all music critics are.
  • I desperately want to know what music this man enjoys so i can laugh at him

@ Kex: well, if it's playing in a workplace i can understand your frustration there

otherwise just switch it off or change stations

  • like for serious this is some of the best work he's done in the better part of a decade.
  • That said I am baffled by the fact that it apparently took four people to write that hook.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i don't watch Todd in the Shadows but i was under the impression that half this forum does?

he must have some non-terrible opinions

Like I'm not denying that you've provided examples I'm just saying that I listen to this stuff every day and I can only recall a handful of songs I've actually enjoyed.

You're doing that thing where you judge a body of work based on what it "probably" is again.

  • his criticism of this Jay-Z song literally does not mention the music at all apart from saying that Justin Timberlake's voice is annoying
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.

I don't watch Todd in the Shadows but I like his acronym
  • saying that Justin Timberlake's voice is annoying

I have heard all I need to hear.

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't reviewing pop music in the charts basically Todd's entire shtick?

seems an improbable occupation for a dedicated rockist in this day and age

Things I have read in music columns of many newspapers would disagree with you.

No!! ^_^ I can't even get to the final stage yet.
  • his criticism of this Jay-Z song literally does not mention the music at all apart from saying that Justin Timberlake's voice is annoying

He already reviewed the song. It was actually one of his longer reviews IIRC.

Not without context. He's actually a pretty big fan of Justin Timberlake.
