  • Incidentally despite not speaking very much Dutch at all, I have spent enough time around that part of my family that I can inflect a fairly convincing heavy Hollander accent.

@ CA: that's the same as General American, right?

my accent is kind of a mess... my parents' accents are already hybrids of different regional accents, but i don't talk like them, either

One thing I've always found kinda interesting is how, even within different parts of the same state, people in big cities and people from rural areas tend to have very different accents

  • this is so surreal

you have to go up further north before you get people with accents this thick tho
they actually missed "it's not that cold out, it's just the windchill"

    how do you miss that?
  • The people who live up here in Appalachia (at least the ones who have their whole lives) talk like Georgians. It's kinda weird.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.

Actually I kinda wonder about it. I lived almost all of my childhood in upstate New York, so I must've grown up speaking like however they do up there. But now I've lived more than a decade in Pennsyltucky, so I wonder if my speech has changed any.

You live near Pittsburgh don't you? You probably have what people around here would call a Steelworker accent.

what a bizarre thing to say.

isn't that the Pittsburgish version of "y'all"

    pretty much.
  • I wanna show off my CK2 hand-labeled map again.

I am too proud of my inane accomplishments.

in minnesota we have three kinds of weather:

    * ok

    * it's not that hot out, it's just the humidity (*90 or above*)

    * it's not that cold out, it's just the windchill (*5 or below*)

    I guess so, yeah.

In middle school I knew a girl who moved here from Kentucky...she mentioned that everyone here sounded "proper" to her, because we had the same kind of accent she was used to hearing on TV and movies...
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    I was in Minnesota once

mid-November, it was fucking cold for serious.
  • in Pennsylvania we have two kinds of weather. "Florida Spring" and "Minnesota Autumn".
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
in Britain we don't really count or list the kinds of weather we have, we just complain about all of them

This is my Great Albion game just a decade into its conversion to a Europa Universalis 4 game.

The most obvious change is the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire from a single, unified nation, into many, that function as a loose coalition (this always happens *unless* the HRE is at maximum Crown Authority before the conversion takes place).

Also note Byzantine expansion and the beginnings of Albionic colonization into Africa.

Poland (the red state in the Baltics) has also managed to pull itself together after being on the brink of collapse for quite a long time in CK2. It's a fairly major power now and has totally absorbed Lithuania, and vassalized Prussia (the pink state) and Grodno, the small, wedge-shaped green state to its immediate east.

Mindleap: one of the stupidest Tumblr posts I've seen was one that said people shouldn't describe rapidly changing weather as "bipolar" because it makes light of bipolar disorder.

Like, um, bipolar is a valid adjective, with meanings outside the context of psychological disorders, guys. It can describe anything that moves between two extremes.

by that logic, it's offensive to refer to areas with low atmospheric pressure as depressions

i'm also reminded of Sokal and Bricmont taking exception to Baudrillard's use of 'turbulence' in a non-physics sense when discussing history

lol the unfollow button is a thing I have learned to appreciate
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
  • the increasing emphasis on the whole "make the rest of the song really pretty to make the boring drop sound heavier" thing is what killed brostep for me

It's amazing how much turning out the lights and turning down the brightness on my laptop can make me feel better

I felt all shitty and tired a half hour ago but now I'm fine
  • (*trance plucks*)

    (*plaintive female vocals*)

    (*generic white noise risers*)

    (*extended snare roll*)

    (*some random vocal sample*)

(*shitty Massive/FM8 warbling with halftime kick/snare thing that's been done to death, possibly including a drop in tempo if you're really desperate*)
  • edited 2014-01-11 22:21:21

    (*breakdown*)

    (*reintroduce pluck theme*)

(*pretty overly sibilant lady voice singing something else if you have the budget, copy-paste the same thing if you're lacking the cash*)

    (*build again*)

(*literally exactly the same drop, with some samples switched out and/or a tempo and drum pattern alteration if you're feeling frisky*)

    (*throwaway outro*)

    too cute

    That's adorable

She just keeps looking back and forth
  • Variations:

    * throw in like 3 different massive/FM8 patches and some vocal slices into the drop for that "complextro" sound

    * replace the plucks and pretty lady singing with machine noises that somebody else recorded (*because you need pro skills to do that right*) and vox samples from Transformers for a Rottun Records vibe

    * cut all the low end out of the bass patches, remove the plucks, replace the lady singing with a stoned dude saying something, speed up whatever parameter oscillation you have going on in the patch and use 808 drums with some trap styled hi-hat rolls

there you can now do most of the kinds of brostep

    Music is the-goshdang it.

  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i don't agree with either of them

you'll have to pick one, or you'll be agreeing with me
  • I don't actually think music is terrible I am just frustrated by my own music.

At least I got this thing done today.

    I'm totally stealing that
  • Watched Todd's Top Ten Worst of 2013 list and now I have a mix of crappy pop music in my head.
  • lately i've just been really low on actually wanting to make anything music-wise

like i've learned so many different things, but i'm not sure what i want to do with it and because i can't find an area to focus on so i'm having a hard time improving further...
  • that said, i've gotten much better at creating melodic aspects to my songs

there are just a few things that i am still having a hard time with...

I have a hard time retaining any music knowledge at all and I don't know why.

I've done things before in my songs that even if I am literally staring at the project bones, I have no idea how I did.

Hopefully it was just "Blurred Lines" 20 times.
  • i will go watch it now too i guess because i'm bored

apparently he thinks 2013 was mind-bendingly awful

the existence of Run The Jewels on its own would make 2013 a great year in music.

But I think that Todd guy only really pays attention to pop music? I may be wrong.
