Perhaps it's because the characters don't stretch. I mean, Jake stretches, but besides that, the characters tend to move like actors in heavy make-up rather than cartoon characters.

Trumpeter Ric Colbeck was an interesting white cat who came to the U.S. to blow some free emotion with NYC loft dwellers.
Ric Colbeck released one album as a leader on the British label Fontana and invited Lissack to play drums. Osborne appears again and the quartet is filled out by French bassist extraordinaire Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark. A fiery, advanced post-bop session, The album “The Sun is Coming Up” may be one of the best entries into the free jazz pantheon. Sadly, Colbeck died shortly thereafter (“Ric was an idiot. He was drinking himself to death while we were doing it.)

I don't mean the animation itself! Animation for Adventure Time is dang smooth.
I mean the way the characters are visually portrayed. Their proportions and features are either a bit too simplistic (i.e. the faces) or a bit too realistic (i.e. the general proportions of the humanoids, sans Ice King).
Season 5, maybe. I haven't been watching periodically so it might've gotten dumb while I wasn't looking. But 1-3 are gold and you can't convince me otherwise, nuh uh
