I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Disney's history with racial stereotyping makes me kind of uncomfortable with being fond of their work when not accounting for those
It would be easier to write off with "it was a different time" if not for the fact that Walt was considered especially xenophobic even then and the fact that Disney markets these works as timeless and flawless
and the fact that Disney markets these works as timeless and flawless
I'm not justifying it at all, but how would they market them otherwise? "Our movie's kinda racist because it was made in the 40's but you should still buy it cause it's good. -head nod-"
Money is the prime directive, yada yada yada, et all.
I thought the rumours of Walt being anti-semitic were just an urban legend.
Well, I think that Neal Gabler and Floyd Norman would likely be able to give a better answer to that than I, as they knew the man personally and I didn't. Dunno what their accounts say, but it's probably more accurate than this alligator's knowledge.
I, for one, really despise the Disney Movies from a folklorist standpoint.
From a folklorist standpoint i think they've probably done more harm than good, yes, though it's hard to judge, since their movies never have much to do with the source material and no one company is to blame for the decline of folk culture. That was a joint effort by mass media.

Disney has a place in my heart because of the Kingdom Hearts series, but that doesn't mean I won't call it out for being stupid when they're being stupid.
Heck, if you want me to complain about the Princess and the Frog, I could probably manage a small rant.

To be honest, I'm not sure. Disney has always been famous for craftsmanship and artistry, but I guess the onus is on parents and guardians to educate children about stereotyping...
I'm thinking of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection sets' (unskippable) warnings about potentially insensitive content. Those sets are targeted at animation buffs, though, not necessarily the general public...
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
PATF's big issue is the fact that it's one of the few Disney films that has diversity in the characters but the two PoC leads both spend the majority of their screen time as frogs.
One could also say it was insensitive about voodooism and that area of New Orleanian culture but I think you can primarily chalk that up to the fact that the Shadowman was a practitioner who used his power for evil (although there's also a prominent character who was also into voodoo and was positively portrayed).

I dunno, just a general feeling that things are moving too fast
I personally really enjoyed PATF, however. It was clever, subversive and came at a time when Disney needed to realize that not everything needed to be CGI.
One could say they might need to learn that lesson again, but I digress.
if Disney had a better track record for race i'd defend it, but at present the accusations of tokenism in the Disney Princess line seem pretty justified
Look, Snopes, the one about the dog being bad luck is frigging true, and anyone who says otherwise needs to be punched. OR maybe that only applies to me, but really, I'm surprised you didn't know that pictures of dogs are also bad luck, gotta turn all pictures of dogs so they don't face the card table. Don't want the dogs seeing your cards. And you better not have a picture of that picture of dogs playing poker.
And also, picking up your cards before the dealer has given them all out is demonstrably bad luck. Like, statistically bad luck, as in, it increases the amount of time the cards are in your hand, and thus the time spent in danger of papercut-by-card.
Then again, Snopes is pretty stupid when it comes to certain things; like whether it's bad luck to have a raven's shadow cross your path, or to have a raven cast a shadow on you.

I need to get to the part where Marceline is introduced so I can start shipping Bubbline
^^ i'd be interested to hear your criticisms of that movie, yes.
i enjoyed it, but obviously, much of the culture represented is alien to me coming from England...
Well, my biggest criticism of it is more of a technical thing. I find that the movie doesn't come together as a cohesive whole. The comedy-relief sidekicks (and most of their major scenes) felt completely ancillary to the plot. The traditional Disney princess 'This is me and this is what I want!' song felt like it was only there to satisfy that quota. Simply, the business felt like a fill-in-the-blanks Disney film. Sure, the blanks were filled in well, but they didn't form a full-fledged story.
As for the treatment of my people, Tre got to most of it before me. But in a way, it's not so much that Tiana's a frog for most of the film. It's that this is different from the typical princess behavior. You could make a case for Mulan, who's disguised as 'Ping' for a good part of her film, but every other princess gets to keep their body for the duration of the film. And every other princess, with the exception of Belle and Mulan, actually starts the film as a princess. Even then, Mulan's family is most likely upper-class, judging by the size of their estate, and Belle's considered to be the pretties in her hometown. Each of them has their royalty bestowed upon them. Tiana's the only one who had to earn it.

it was criticized in some circles, but it certainly wasn't received how it would have been now...
i like a lot about Disney, but they've done plenty i can't excuse

particularly jarring in the cases of Merida and Mulan

i do not need punching, thanks.
Do you ever see dogs playing cards? No. Because dogs are unlucky at cards.
Also, do you ever see a person let a dog shuffle the deck? No.
And why do casinos have signs saying "No Dogs Allowed"?
i might not believe in fate, but even i'm not stupid enough to tempt it.
and surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
Fun fact: Of the nine dogs-playing-poker paintings by C.M. Coolidge, this is my second-favorite.

i always find it kind of funny when an art object appears in pop culture
like on Jools Holland at the moment he has a molten clock on the piano
if Almost There was by numbers, it was still a great song
i actually thought TPatF was less by-numbers than Tangled, though i enjoyed the latter more on a second viewing
eh, true
it's already kind of kitschy, i guess
i'm not much into art, tbh
i wish i understood it better
