Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
Hi, everyone.
Today, we had a tornado watch, but thankfully it didn't become a warning. There was a weird burst of rain that lasted about 5 or 10 minutes, though.
...I should come up with my own fictional zip code.
Then again, I like the Veronica Mars reference.
Then again then again, Neptune is apparently in the heart of SoCal, and Greyson can't be there.
Then again then again then again, I did say Greyson was "about an hour's drive to Chicago", so that rules out any possibility of it being in California.

Westland Galleria Mall 4130 Central Avenue
You referenced me and a dying mall in my hometown. Neat! :D
Dead malls fascinate and sadden me at the same time. Stuck at the Galleria was actually inspired by one, a little bit. Back when North Hills was still enclosed we'd go a few times. It was always empty but all the lights were on and it still looked like it was in pretty good shape. There was a strange allure to it even though you could tell no one liked it anymore.
But then they demolished it and replaced it with what's there now. Except the JCPenney, that stayed there for some reason. It looks almost exactly the same, too, but with some added flair to make it look current.

I remember when you were talking about dead malls about a month ago. I forget whether it was here or in the TVT thread, but seeing you guys talk about it made it really interesting. Oddly, the same interest was not found in the dead mall blogs I Googled afterward.
It was pretty, but nobody went there in the 90's and 2000's because the Crabtree Mall that was only two highway exits down remodeled and kicked its ass.
But NH is thriving now. It currently looks like this.

Wow. How long did it take for them to make an indoor mall into an outdoor mall? That sounds like the kind of thing that would take about 5 or 10 years, though I'm by no means an expert in mall construction.

There's talk of perhaps "revitalizing" the Westland Mall area when the casino finally opens, but whether this means remodeling the mall or just tearing it down and redeveloping the land is an open question. The latter seems more likely, sadly.
Westland was originally one of Columbus's three "direcctional" malls, alongside Northland and Eastland. Northland began dying in the 1990s and early 2000s when it couldn't compete with the new Easton Town Center and Polaris Fashion Place, and it was demolished by 2004. Eastland, on the other hand, was remodeled thoroughly around the same time and seems to still be hanging in there, somehow, though it has a lot of not-part-of-a-chain stores, which is usually a sign of a dying mall.
North Hills was closed for about 2 years. It got closed in January and demolished in April '03 and the only things that stayed were the parking deck and the JCP. The "mall" (you can't really call it one anymore though) was reopened in November '04 but it was only around 2005 when most of the stores opened. (The underground P-Fresh Target was one of these. I believe it showed up around '06.)
It's really nice there now. All the rich kids and their parents shop there.

So it looks like my family will probably be doing another weekend trip to Georgia this summer.
I wonder if I could convince my parents to buy me a 2013 Rand McNally Road Atlas before the trip. Last year we relied heavily on mine, but it's a 2010 edition so it's probably a bit out of date.
(Not that Interstate 75 has changed any time since 2010, but what my parents don't know won't hurt their wallets)

^^Yay! You get to come see where I live again! Not that we're likely to cross paths, of course.
It would actually be interesting to see some of you in person, as unlikely as that is.

I miss playing this.
Well, not when the books take place, anyway.
@CentralAvenue: Whoa, there's a Westland Mall in Columbus? Nice. That's quite a coinkydink.

Huh, that's kinda sad.
